The new leader of UNP can join the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) if he wishes to do so, SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Banadara said yesterday.
Mr. Madduma Bandara told a press conference that a new UNP leader who ever it would be, is welcomed to join SJB. He said this in response to a question raised by the journalists as to whether SJB would be willing to work with former State Minister Ruwan Wijewardene as the new leader of the UNP.
“We have already decided to contest future elections as SJB under the telephone symbol and UNP can join us as a constituent party,” Mr. Madduma Bandara said.
“Any UNPer could join us directly as well. However we will accept only clean politicians who do not have any allegations of corruption,” he added.
Mr. Madduma Bandara said his party will decide on the constitutional reforms once the government comes out with drafts on these amendments. “We have to decide on our stand on the constitution only after determining that the devil is actually black as it is anticipated,” he said.
“Constitutional reforms should be aimed at ensuring democratic rights of the people and not at fulfilling the whims and fancies of individuals.
