Minor floods reported in Gampaha, Kalutara Districts

• The Department of Meteorology yesterday warned of heavy showers exceeding 150 mm in certain parts of the country

A minor flood situation has been reported in the Gampaha and Kalutara Districts as the water levels of the Kalu Ganga and Attanagalu Oya have risen, the Department of Irrigation said yesterday.  

 People in the low-lying areas of Minuwangoda, Ja- Ela, Milleniya, Kalutara, Horana, Ingiriya and Mathugama had been warned to be vigilant in that regard.  

The Department of Meteorology yesterday warned of heavy showers exceeding 150 mm in certain parts of the country and said that generally wet weather would prevail in Sri Lanka during the coming days.  

The department did forecast 150mm of rain in the Western, Sabaragamuwa Provinces and in Galle, Matara and Nuwara Eliya in the coming days.  

High winds were forecast in the seas off Sri Lanka, South Indian seas, Arabian sea and Bay of Bengal. Winds were expected to go up to 70kmph in those sea areas.  

Meanwhile, the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) had issued  landslide warnings in Colombo, Galle, Kalutara, Matara, Nuwara Eliya and  the Ratnapura Disricts.  

Some areas have received heavy rainfalls yesterday with the highest rainfall of 215mm recorded in Ingiriya, while Horana had received a rainfall of 170.5mm, Parindanuwara 124mm and Padukka 111mm.
