A police sergeant of Kebithigollewa Police was sentenced to three - year rigorous imprisonment by Colombo High Court Judge Manjula Thilakarathna yesterday for accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000.
The convict was indicted by the Commission to Investigate Allegation of Bribery or Corruption for soliciting and accepting a bribe not to object for granting bail to suspect Jayasena Lalith Jayasena who was arrested in connection with a case filed by the Kebithigollewa Police.
The convict was arrested by the Bribery sleuths on May 17, 2013, while accepting the bribe from Thetuwage Wanamalee, the sister of the suspect. Judge Manjula Thilakarathna imposed judgement to the convict after observing that the case against convict was proved beyond reasonable doubt by the prosecution. Counsel Manori Kariyawasam of the Commission prosecuted. Bribery Officer E.T. Priyantha of the Commission assisted the Counsel during the inquiry of the case.
