The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) will field its own candidate at the next presidential election, its politburo member K.D. Lalkantha said yesterday. He told a news conference that his party would reveal the name of its candidate early next month.
“We will launch a national movement by early next month to stand for people’s rights and issues. Our next presidential candidate will be someone who is in this national movement. He will be from our politburo. Our supporters claim that the presidential candidate should be someone from the JVP as they could not rely on others,” he said.
Commenting on the government’s move to lease out Eastern jetty of the Colombo Harbour, he said the JVP trade unions had launched a campaign against such an initiative and requested all trade unions, politicians and people to join the struggle in a bid to force the government to withdraw its proposal.
“ We urge the President, the opposition leader and other political leaders including R. Sampanthan, Rauff Hakeem and Rishad Bathiudeen to reveal their stance on this issue. All ministers and MPs should express their standpoint too. Potential presidential candidates such as Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Basil Rajapaksa, Karu Jayasuriya, Sajith Premadasa and Champika Ranawaka should do the same. They should at least reveal their stance through a press release,” he said.
He also called out for religious leaders including the Mahanayake Theras of the three Nikayas and the Cardinal to step forward in protecting the Eastern jetty. “The JVP has planned to stage an indefinite Satyagraha campaign outside the Fort Railway Station and at the entrance to the Colombo Harbour until the proposal was withdrawn,” he said.
