The Department of Meteorology yesterday issued a weather advisory for today, asking people in 14 districts to be extremely cautious of the hot weather.
The districts are Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mannar, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Trincomalee, Anuradhapura, Puttalam, Polonnaruwa, Kurunegala, Monaragala, Batticaloa, Ampara and Hambantota.
The department warned that those living in these areas should avoid venturing outside too much in the next few days, particularly in the morning hours since exposure to such excessive hot weather could cause heat strokes, cramps and heat exhaustion .
Several areas including Gampaha, Colombo, Kalutara, Galle and Matara would also experience hot weather and residents were warned to take extra precautions when they are out in the open in these areas.
The Meteorology Department said the Heat Index Forecast was calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and the effect it has on the body. The department advises the public to remain hydrated and take rests without being out in the open at their job sites. They also advised those caring for the elderly and the sick who are indoors to take extra precautions and not to leave children unattended.
