An extreme caution level heat weather advisory was issued by the Department of Meteorology yesterday for Polonnaruwa, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Ampara, Moneragala and Hambantota districts.
According to the heat index issued by the department, the districts of Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mannar, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Anuradhapura, Puttalam, Kurunegala, Matale, Gampaha, Colombo, Kalutara, Badulla, Galle and Matara have been mentioned under extreme caution level. In the extreme cautioned areas, it may be possible to have heat cramps, exhaustion and continuing activity could result in heatstrokes. Polonnaruwa, Batticaloa, Polonnaruwa, Moneragala, Ampara and Hambantota have also been recorded as vulnerable areas. The Met Department said the Heat Index Forecast was calculated using relative humidity and maximum temperature and the condition that is felt on the human body.
The department also advised the public to remain hydrated and take breaks in the shade as often as possible at job sites. They also advised checking on the elderly and the sick who are indoors and warned that children should not be left unattended.
Outdoor workers were advised to limit strenuous activities, find shade and stay hydrated.
