The main issue with regard to the joint venture between Sri Lankan Government and Adani Ltd, is to run the Eastern Terminal as a joint venture has been undertaken between the same Adani Ltd and another Indian company , SJB MP Harin Fernando said yesterday.

Mr. Fernando told a press conference that Adani Group had launched a joint venture with MSC which brought more than 70 of the transshipments to Colombo Port. “MSC also owns a port called Mundra, just north of Mumbai. A problem would arise if Adani Group and MSC shift transshipment to Mundra Port. This will make the Colombo Port idle
without business,” the MP said.

“Therefore, the issue is not handing over the Eastern Terminal to Indians but the joint venture which the Sri Lankan Government had got into,” he said.

He also said that the government should state whether it will have the power to appoint a CEO for the Eastern Terminal.
