Party needs a new leadership considering the prevailing circumstances but it will take some time for a new leader to emerge
By Yohan Perera
Discussions on reforming the UNP would begin today but it will take some days to resolve the leadership issue, an MP who is backing Sajith Premadasa who had been named the Leader of the Opposition said yesterday.
Member of Parliament Ajith P. Perera told a press conference yesterday that it will take some days for the UNP to resolve the leadership issues.
“Party needs a new leadership considering the prevailing circumstances but it will take some time for a new leader to emerge. Give us a few days and we will emerge with a new leader,” Mr Perera said.
“Current Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe had served as the party leader for 25 years and we thank him for the good work he had done for the party,” he added.
It was reported earlier that an idea has been mooted to have an interim arrangement for the party under which a leadership Council will be appointed to handle the General Elections campaign.
A permanent leader will be appointed after the elections, he further said.
