The main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) is to inform the government that it will support the constitution making exercise only if Parliament is converted into a Constitutional Assembly.

SJB Kandy District MP Lakshman Kiriella told a media conference that his party would only agree to support the government in working out  a new constitution only if it agrees to it.

“The experts' committee which was appointed by the government to compile a new constitution has informed us to send in our proposals for a new constitution. We will therefore inform the committee in writing that we will participate in the process of compiling a new constitution only if the government is agreeable to convert Parliament into a constitutional assembly,” Mr. Kiriella said.
