The Supreme Court yesterday in its order directed the Elections Commission to hold the elections of the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha after accepting nominations by the Democratic United National Front (DUNF).
The Bench comprised Justtices Prasanna Jayawardena, Murdhu Fernando and Vijith Malalgoda.
The DUNF in its petition complained their nominations were rejected for the Local Government election of the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha. On January 30, 2018, the Supreme Court had issued an interim injunction preventing elections being held for the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha, after considering the petition filed by the DUNF in connection with the upcoming Local Government polls.
The DUNF party secretary challenged the rejection of his party’s nomination paper for the February local government polls. The court issued an interim order preventing the EC from holding elections to the Elpitiya PS until its final determination.
Court ordered the Election Commission to accept the DUNF nominations list and hold the election.
