Navin Ratnayake, driver of the defender involved in the hit-and-run that killed Borella Traffic OIC IP Ananda Sagara Sarathchandra, was further remanded till March 18 by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
The magistrate ordered the suspect to be produced in an identification parade on March 18 and informed the police to produce a comprehensive report on the incident that took place on February 24 in Bambalapitiya. The inspector riding a motorcycle had been knocked down by the defender (WP FZ - 9143) followed by a Prado. The OIC was severely injured in the accident and succumbed to his injuries last Saturday at the Colombo National Hospital.
Eight individuals including the defender driver who happens to be the son of a Superintendent of Police (SP), Colombo Municipal Councillor Duminda Sudammika Attygalle and Rasika Bandara Aluthgamage, the son of MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage were arrested in connection with the incident. Earlier, the passengers and driver of the Prado were arrested for not reporting the accident. Later, they were released on bail. The funeral of IP Sarathchandra was held yesterday at the Borella cemetery with full police honours.
