The 47-year-old suspect who was arrested over an alleged child trafficking racket, known as ‘baby farming’ in which infants have been exchanged for payment following an agreement with mothers, had been released on bail yesterday.
The suspect was released on two sureties of Rs. 200,000 after being produced before the Moratuwa Magistrate. The case would be taken in the court again on January 4, 2021.
The suspect was arrested in Ukuwela, Matale on Monday, following a lenagthy investigation conducted by the Police- Children and Women’s Bureau.
Meanwhile, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said that further investigation has revealed that about 42 children have been sold to third parties after entering into an agreement with mothers with the suspect.
He said the suspect had carried out the racket at two locations in Moratuwa through a video uploaded as an advertisement on social media.
The Spokesman said an investigation would be carried out to arrest those who have helped the suspect in the racket.
