Two women Sub-Inspectors (SIs), serving as OICs of Women and Child Affairs Bureaus at Nikaweratiya and Kotawehera Police Stations, have been interdicted on the charges of negligence of duty in connection with the assault on a 13-year-old girl from Nikaweratiya. The two women SIs were interdicted by the Nikaweratiya ASP with effect from Sunday.
The police earlier arrested the father and stepmother of the victim, along with a female Grama Niladhari, for allegedly assaulting the teenager. This was prompted after a video of the victim being assaulted by two females using a cricket bat went viral on social media platforms. The suspects who were produced at the Nikaweratiya Magistrate’s Court were remanded till January 16.
Police said both women SIs had refused to record the statements of the victim’s mother and grandmother when they had gone to the Nikaweratiya and Kotawehera Police Stations to lodge complaints.
