Around 570 cigarettes, seven mobile phones, three chargers and three data cables hidden in logs were found at the Angunukolapelessa Prison yesterday, Prisons Spokesman Chandana Ekanayake said.
He said these items were found from the lorry of the person who supplies firewood to the Prison.
“The operation was carried out by the Prison officers at the Prison, based on information received from the Prison intelligence officers,” he said.
The driver and two others were arrested in connection with the incident. Meanwhile, the Prisons Spokesman said a parcel containing mobile phones, chargers, SIM cards, batteries and drugs etc, thrown on a lane inside the Galle Prison was also found by the prison officers.
“The operation was launched by a team of prison officers, who were on night duty on Thursday (18),” Ekanayake said.
“The items were handed over to the Galle Police Station for further inquiry,” he added. He said search operations would be carried out on a regular basis in future, to detect these kinds of equipment.
