AG sends Mahendran extradition docs to Foreign Ministry

• Expects official request will be sent to Singapore

• Process will be to extradite former CBSL Governor for HC trial

The Attorney General (AG) has forwarded necessary legal documents with regard to the extradition of former Central Bank (CBSL) Governor Arjuna Mahendran to the Defence and Foreign Ministries in expectation that an official request be sent to the Singaporean Government over the extradition.  

These legal documents consisting 21,000 pages are expected to be sent to Singapore based on indictments filed against the former CBSL Governor in High Court by the AG on June 28, 2019. 

In order to extradite a person from another country who had committed an offence while in Sri Lanka, he should be indicted or charged by the prosecution or convicted by a court of law, Coordinating Officer to the AG SC Nishara Jayaratne told Daily Mirror. 

On an earlier occasion, the Colombo High Court issued an arrest warrant against Mahendran after he had been indicted. Before that, at the magisterial inquiry, the court issued several red notices via Interpol on the request of the CID. 

Additional Solicitor-General Parinda Ranasinghe PC had prepared these documents on behalf of the AG. The extradition process will be conducted in view of getting down the former CBSL Governor for the High Court trial. 

The accused have been indicted with nine others in connection to the charges arising out of the Treasury Bond auction held on February 27, 2015 (in respect of the face value of Rs.10.058 billion) causing a loss of Rs.688 million to the government.
