The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) said that it had launched an investigation into several statements made by former MPs Rajitha Senaratne and Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka resulting in Coronavirus fear-mongering among the general public.
Accordingly, Field Marshal Fonseka reported having said at a media briefing that three Coronavirus diagnosed patients had died.
Earlier, DIG Ajith Rohana had rejected the claim and said legal action would be taken against anyone for publishing false information irrespective of their position.
Former Minister Senaratne addressing a media conference on Tuesday had claimed that 25 people, who had gone to watch the Royal-Thomian Big Match had infected COVID-19 and that 10 children of a leading school in Colombo had also contracted the disease.
