It was with deep shock that I received this sad news from a mutual friend of ours this morning.I have known Ranil from around 10 years of age and we played cricket together at STC from under 14 to first eleven and then at the SSC in an unbroken partnership for many many years. We enjoyed his company, his wit and humour off the field reminicing of on field situations that he narrated in lighter vein to howls of laughter. He went on to give a much needed filip to the art of commentaries with great passion and fulfilled his ultimate dream of becoming a reputed commentator travelling around the cricketing globe. We will miss you Ranil and thank you for the wonderful times we spent together at STC and the SSC in the years gone by. My heartfelt condolences goes to his wife Roshika and his family.

1973 was a very proud for me as a young Thomian as Ranil A went on to win the Best Bowler, Best All-Rounder and Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year Awards....and it was my privilege to have his brothers as school mates and his father as a Headmaster and Sub-Warden. The Thomian community and Sri Lanka have lost a great gentleman. Ranil was also Hockey Captain and Senior Sacristan in the College Chapel and was also Head Prefect!
My condolences to his wife, his brothers and the rest of the family. God Bless all and give them strength and hope.

prasad Gunewardene Tuesday, 21 February 2012 06:34 AM

The sudden demise of my classmate Ranil Gemunu Abeynaike is a great loss to the Thomian Class of 1962 which has prepared to celebrate 50 years of Thomian friendship in the first week of March 2012. The news of his sudden death came as a shock to all of us this morning. His Thomian spinning partners in the year he captained the First Evelen-Ajith Abeygunewardene and Ravi Abeywardene would feel deeply sad by the passing away of their skipper.Incidentally, Ranil was a key figure expected at this event being a former Thomian Skipper in cricket and Hockey, a College Prefect and a Monitor in our class. Ranil was loved by all his classmates. He always sported an innocent smile on his face.
We miss Ranil very much not only at the event but also in life as a dear friend. We extend our sympathies and condolence to his family and brothers.
May the green turf that he played in his life lie softly on the gentle remains of our dear friend,Ranil Gemunu Abeynaike.

I once remember how Ranil reacted when someone had parked him in close the MCG. He had to wait for sometime for them to get back and when that person came Ranil just smiled at him and didn;t say a word. When that person moved the car, Ranil's car moved out and he just waved and left. Such patience and character. May he rest in peace.
