Customs to destroy 22 varieties of drugs

The Customs today took action to destroy some 22 varieties of drugs imported to Sri Lanka on different occasions without the approval of the Drugs Monitoring Authority These were seized by the Custom officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport.

Rs.17 million worth of drugs had been brought here from Pakistan and India. Substandard tablets including injections used for abortions and birth control, tablets prescribed for mental patients and intoxicant tablets were found among the drugs.

Expensive drugs used in treating kidney transplant patients and cancer patients were also among the stock of drugs. Some drugs were priced as high as Rs 105, 000. Pix by Deepa Adikari
