The Army and the police assisted commuters who were stranded in bus stands due to the island-wide bus strike which was launched by private bus operators. The strike was called off this evening after the government agreed to increase bus fares by 20 percent. Pix by Kushan Pathiraja
The private bus owners will have no such power to create undue difficulties if there is only one kind of bus service in Sri Lanka. In the early days there was the C.T.B bus service plying on all routes. However, due to the inefficiency of its operations and fraud the C.T.B bus service was overtaken by the private bus operators. So, the Govt. should revamp C.T.B and provide an efficient service according to set time tables (including comfortable long distance express services etc) again.
