Prince Charles visited the 172-year-old Mackwoods Tea Factory at Labukale in Nuwara Eliya, yesterday and celebrated his 65th Birthday. He was welcomed by the Sri Lankan High Commissioner in United Kingdom Dr. Chris Nonis. Pix by Kushan Pathiraja
When I last visited Labookelle Tea Estater a couple of years ago I remember making a comment that they need to serve a far better quality Tea to their visitors, as the quality of Tea I had there was very poor. The quality of Tea in the highlands of Sri Lanka of late has been extremely poor and one of the reasons for this I believe is AIR POLLUTION BY DIESEL FUMES, ALL DAY LONG - so much so that the poor Tea plants are 'suffocating'. The tea industry needs to take a long and hard look at this AND corect it ASAP if they are to regain the quality of 'Champagne' Teas of years gone by. MM
