As their first step towards this end, they are ready to introduce to the market a full range of products aimed at local consumers during the coming New Year season. This range includes Mustard Cream, Noodles, Soya Sauce, Salt, Tomato Sauce, Mango and Ambrella Chutney, Basmati Rice and a special Rice for making Biryani and a significant fact is that they have sourced most of these products from local producers.
Commenting on this background situation Raj Gooneratne, Managing Director of the company stated that importers broke into this market since there was a perception that local products were not up to the standard health and nutrition wise. This is a myth that was exploited by multi-national companies to break into the local markets in Asian countries such as Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh. The Chief Operating Officer of Amco Trading Private Limited Thilak Weerasinghe stated concerning this context in a more expansive way that local producers have achieved a bigger percentage of the market than imported products. As a Sri Lankan company we are very happy about this situation. It is now not necessary for our money to move into foreign entities. We are capable of producing high quality local products, which are far superior to the imported ones. Therefore we do not have to give pride of place to imported products. All we have to do is to apprise our consumers about this situation. And to empower local and medium scale producers to rise up to the challenge.
