In a detailed study in the recently released Supplementary Environmental Impact Assessment (SEIA) report of the Port City Project, it is revealed that when considering the quarry material requirement for the Port City Project in relation to the total quarry production capacity in the identified existing quarries in the Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara Districts, the required quantum is negligible.

Out of the total 250 quarries surveyed by the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau’s Technical Services (GSMBTS) in these three districts, only 11 quarries will be used for the supply of granite for the Port City Project.

It was found during the study that most of the industrial mining licence (IML) A category quarries are not operating due to lack of demand. The report says that when considering the total existing licensed quarries in all three Districts of Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara, the volume of rock to be obtained from the identified quarries works out to only 7.0 percent and 2.3 percent of quarry capacity of quarries in Colombo and Gampaha, respectively and 0 percent from Kalutara, as the project does not expect to source quarry material from this district.

According to the study, in order to assess the expected impacts due to demand for quarry materials, all the existing IML A, B and C category quarry details of Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara Districts were obtained from the GSMBTS. The report says that the supply of the 2.83 million cubic metres of quarry materials required to complete the reclamation work would not cause any significant impact on the other running projects in the vicinity of the Western Province. The project is expected to have a continuous supply of 5735 metre cubes of quarry materials per day on average during the reclamation phase. This quarry material demand can be easily obtained from a number of selected IML-A and IML-B grade quarries.

The table from the SEIA describes the total number of existing quarries in each of the three districts mentioned and the total number of quarries studied in each of those districts.
