Finance and Mass Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera yesterday appointed acting heads for the two state banks—Bank of Ceylon (BOC) and People’s Bank.
Treasury Senior Deputy Secretary A.R. Desapriya was appointed as Acting Chairman of BOC, while Treasury Deputy Secretary A.M.P.M.B. Atapattu was appointed as Acting Chairman of People’s Bank.
These two officers have been serving on the board of directors of the two banks as Treasury representatives.
Treasury Secretary and Finance and Mass Media Ministry Secretary Dr. R.H.S. Samaratunga yesterday said the two appointments would enable both BOC and People’s Bank to raise US $ 200 million each from the Middle East on behalf of the government as earlier planned.
A number of state-run agencies currently remain headless due to the committee appointed by President Maithripala Sirisena to vet the qualifications of the nominees.
