Sri Lanka’s mobile internet users will soon start to experience speeds similar to fixed broadband which is now offering 100 Megabits per second (Mbps), according to a senior broadband technology expert.
According to the head of the national broadband initiative, Sanath Siriwardena, Sri Lanka’s mobile broadband speeds had been lagging behind in comparison to fixed broadband speeds till recently but now the mobile users will also be able to browse the internet at blazing speeds as the newest technology is now
under testing.
“This technological innovation will end the speed gap between fixed and mobile broadband in Sri Lanka,” Siriwardena said.
Higher mobile broadband speeds are made possible via the Long Term Evolution (LTE) Advanced technology and these higher speeds are likely to be available as early as in another 30 days.
Currently the maximum speed available for mobile broadband users does not exceed 30 Mbps in Sri Lanka under the Fourth Generation (4G) telecom technology.
While the upgrading of the technology in to advanced version at regular intervals has become the norm in the industry, this rapid change has not just challenged the operators’ margins but also the subscribers as they are now required to shift from one technology to another with very limited time for changeover.
However on the positive side, every advanced technology comes with higher cost efficiency for both the operator and the subscriber while the economic and social benefits it brings are invaluable.
Asked if the mobile broadband speeds similar to fixed broadband speeds would be affordable to the general masses once they are available, Siriwardena responded in the positive.
“The operators no more charge for the bandwidth (speed) they offer but for the ‘capacity’ (data) the subscriber utilizes. Hence these higher speeds could be enjoyed by everyone irrespective of their purchasing power,” he explained.
In 2012, Sri Lanka was ranked world’s number one for the lowest fixed broadband charges by the International Telecommunication Union.
Three years ago Siriwardena who was then a consultant for the telecommunication industry regulator, Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) on broadband matters predicted, 4G telecom technology and Fiber-To-The Home (FTTH) technology which allows homes with broadband speeds up to 100Mbps via optical fiber, a thing which has now come to fruition.
“Stagnated fixed broadband market in Sri Lanka has boosted up with the deployment of wide assortment of modern technologies such as 4G LTE (TDD), ADS2 Plus and FTTx soon after 2013. This leads speeds to grow vigorously beyond 100Mbps per individual residential customer,” he remarked.
In fixed broadband sphere, internet speeds of 100 Mbps are already available in the market as one operator has begun to lay optical fiber to offer the service via FTTH technology at affordable monthly rentals.
With this technology, for the first time in South Asia, the national broadband initiative (under TRC) in a joint venture with the Ministry of Education and all the operators initiated a national project to power the computer labs of all the schools with 100 Mbps internet and so far the project has covered 60 national schools.
At this rate of significant technological strides made in the broadband sphere in Sri Lanka, there is a higher likely hood that the mobile broadband speeds could even go above one Gigabits per second (Gbps) in two years.
