The accused Panida Lipt of Thailand was arrested by the Kollupitiya police on August 6, 2011 on charges of having assisted to operate a brothel. The police decoy who carried out the raid had made a payment of Rs.3,000 in order to buy the Thai woman. Several other suspects who were involved in the incident were also taken into custody.

Its a ironic situation actually..the govt wishes to maintain a clean slate image by taking small measures like this.jst so that the outside world sees sri lanka as a disciplined country.but hey who r they tryng to kid..if u dig in deep there is a lot of corruption going and that too mostly at the hands of politicians themselves.i think its safe to say that a majority of our civillians are actually quite ''innocent''..if their motive is to really eradicate prostitution i wonder why i see so many chinese hookers down duplication road and elsewhere walking so freely like they own the ground beneath them.i even saw one last night for that matter.hmm.

    dillip Friday, 27 January 2012 08:39 AM

I agree with you sunil. It is a free choice, and the government should regulate it and not prosecute it.

    Nodrog Friday, 27 January 2012 12:27 AM

Police seems very active these days in catching prostitutes. Wish they can exert similar efforts to catching rouges, killers, kidnappers, rapist, fraudsters etc who cause greater harm to society.

Its a basic question of economics. Its called supply and demand. They would not operate if there was no demand. This " holier than thou" attitude takes us nowhere. This is a victimless crime. The police should go after real crimes such as robbery, theft, assault, fraud, drugs and so forth & not harass women who are not hurting anyone. The oldest profession in the world can never be eradicated. Go to any country, ask the hotel desk clerk.

This is the oldest profession in the world. Those elite groups have very high class brothels to patronise. and have never been caught in their activities. How many politicians patronise these places and no one was caught.Whether politician or any normal person have same feeling.

The penalties are totally inadequate. It should be more in line with an amount to ensure that she will not be able to do this business ever again or go to jail

Now will the rapes start increasing even more?

Lankans can have sex in thailand, singapore, maldives, india, dubai,KL but,you do same here ,the police will arrest you, humiliate you.

    Shane Friday, 27 January 2012 02:42 AM

the fine imposed by the court is not enough and for the people who operates a brothel this 50k is enough. impose a fine which they cant pay. then only we can expect a full stop for this.

Sex is one of the essential, basic human requirements. So there should be no this fuss about running these "comfort centers" as long as there are clients to patronize them!
