The British Prime Minister, David Cameron issuing a Vesak message sent his best wishes to Buddhists in Britain and around the world celebrating Vesak, the sacred festival commemorating the birth, enlightenment and the passing away (Parinirvana) of the Buddha.

“For millions of people it is a time to reflect on the Buddhist teachings of tolerance and compassion, and to make offerings to those in need. It is a special occasion that reminds us of the sincere and enduring principles espoused by Buddhists throughout the world”, he said.

He said that he especially wished to praise Britain’s Buddhist communities for the outstanding contribution they make to the Britain.

“You play a valued and important part in our Island story and I thank you for everything you do.To Buddhists in the UK and the world, I wish you a happy and peaceful Vesak”, he said.

    Thank you Hon David Cameron. Empathy is ingrained into Buddhist children from childhood along with a strong foundation based on the:
    Five precepts (I refrain from killing; I refrain from stealing; I refrain from sexual misconduct; I refrain from incorrect speech or lying; and I refrain from taking intoxicants)
    and the 4 Noble truths are (1.Dukka-suffering or sorrow;
    2.Reason for Dukka; 3.cessation of suffering; and 4. The eight fold path to eradicating suffering, which are right Understanding, right Thoughts, right Speech, right Action, right Livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness and right concentration).
    In Sri Lanka, whether one is a soldier or a priest or a layman this is what influences the vast majority of Buddhists.
    Once you understand the true Buddhist culture in Sri Lanka, you would definitely change your perceptions and instead rely only on hard evidence.
