The President said that the country, today, is not only self sufficient but in a position to export food to the rest of the world. ”The economic downturn in the world obviously affects us. But through programmes like Gama Neguma and Divi Neguma the agriculture sector has witnessed mega development. The world is facing a food crisis but today not only are we self sufficient but in a position to export food to the rest of the world,” he said. (HF)

    Yuri Sunday, 05 February 2012 03:41 AM

Thats not his fault, the company who wrote the speech!

    Jeff Sunday, 05 February 2012 03:22 AM

Im wandering what country in the right mind would buy at those prices ? Here in america we get lots of food at much cheaper, most grown / made locally than the price its sold back in Sri Lanka.

I recently visited Sri Lanka on a holiday and where ever I went there was enough food all the markets had fresh vegetables, fresh sea food amd meat.
the modern super markets like cargilss, arpico, laughgas and the modern fish markets also cater for the wealthy
I have eaten in five star hotels as well as cheap outlets and road side cafes
they all serve good food for the price you pay.
what I missed was the kadala fellow and rotti fellows in their push cart

    Tintin Saturday, 04 February 2012 11:00 PM

    Good one bro!

    Matalan Saturday, 04 February 2012 05:18 PM

Self-sufficient, Yes we are! - in...

    Concerned Saturday, 04 February 2012 04:21 PM

Sure. Around next week, when petrol and diesel go up in price, we and those who have provided the 2/3 majority in the Parliament will know how self sufficient we are!

    Singhalaya Saturday, 04 February 2012 10:18 AM

What the president say is true

    Kumar Saturday, 04 February 2012 09:54 AM

Why then SL borrow money and import food from other countries?????

    samosa Saturday, 04 February 2012 09:39 AM

    Wow we are self sufficient.

    AMT Saturday, 04 February 2012 08:22 AM

Then why there are so many daily demonstrations and why go to courts to stop them too??

    GameKolla Saturday, 04 February 2012 07:49 AM

I think president is watching RUPAWAHINI and ITN.

    steve Saturday, 04 February 2012 07:23 AM

As the president of of SL; he can just say anything he wants!

Ping Pong Saturday, 04 February 2012 07:21 AM

Well said Your Excellency! Keep up your good work we are with you all the way!

    Weha Saturday, 04 February 2012 05:08 AM

But when we go to the market we see something totally different

Calistus Jayatilleke Saturday, 04 February 2012 07:08 AM

Yes, that may be the reason the Minister of Trade imports stuff like eggs, chicken and coconut and decides to submerge coconuts in the sea!

    citizen1 Saturday, 04 February 2012 06:47 AM

    hahahahahaha

    Thomas Saturday, 04 February 2012 06:45 AM

We are self sufficient in alcohol production.

    xlntgson Saturday, 04 February 2012 06:17 AM

Every nation is interdependent no harm if import add our expertise and export without a mere label change!

    Trualf Saturday, 04 February 2012 06:23 AM

It wil be gread if the prices go down first, later think about exporting. Thank you.

    Denzil Saturday, 04 February 2012 06:08 AM

I believe what he meant is self 'insufficient'. Where is the prawns from Mullativu and fish from the eastern coast that was promised after the war????? When the war was on a kg of seer fish was Rs250/- and now Rs 1,250/- and that goes for every commodity. So, what has been the real benefit to the masses after the war other than travel to the north and east?

Imran Hussein Saturday, 04 February 2012 06:02 AM

If a kilo of rice is Re. 25 yes you can say that. An average man cant afford to buy a kilo of Fish for a lower price or veg at a decent rate. Would anyone beleive this? Living in fools paradise. You have some wonderful advisors Mr President. I dont think you can continue hoodwinking the public for long.

    Gene Saturday, 04 February 2012 06:00 AM

Wake up Mr.President, it's time to deliver your "independance day" speech.

Imran Hussein Saturday, 04 February 2012 05:57 AM

The President is darn right of course, They are self sufficient indeed.

    lankashantha Saturday, 04 February 2012 05:34 AM

Sir I am sorry to say,
lot of elderly people are begging on the streets.
Anyone can see the difference between these elderly people and the regular beggars.
Come to the street or contact the common people and verify.
Don't listen to the people who are covering around you.

    lokka Saturday, 04 February 2012 05:29 AM

    are you kidding yourself ?

Roy Rogers Saturday, 04 February 2012 05:38 AM

Then its time to stop importing food items. lets do that first.

    Yuri Saturday, 04 February 2012 05:17 AM

Self Sufficient after importing and then to export! every product we touch are from India or China.

    Gamaraala Saturday, 04 February 2012 05:02 AM
