Mahela is a real fighter and an incredible player, Sri Lanka Cricket Captain Angelo Matthews speaking at a media briefing said.

He was commenting on the Mahela Jayawardena’s retirement from Test Cricket.

“If you go into a warm-up match with him, he'll still try to fight and win. That's the kind of character he is and he is an unbelievable player,” Mathews said in Colombo.

He said Mahela had helped him since the first day he met him and been helpful to young players.

“He is a great teacher. He teaches the youngsters and corrects their mistakes,” he said.

He said it would be difficult to find a replacement for Mahela.

Mahela Jayawardene's farewell is scheduled to be held on Thursday at the SSC ground.

Pakistan skipper Misbah-ul-Haq said Mahela was a class player and had achieved many goals at the SSC ground.

“But our plan is simple, it is to get him out early in tomorrow’s final test match,” he said. (Champika Fernando and Sanath Desmond)
