Vaas and Suraj on standby

Chaminda Vaas and Suraj Randiv to be flown to Mumbai today as standby players for the injured members of the SL team, who are scheduled to meet India in the World Cup finals on Saturday.

"Chaminda Vaas and Suraj Randiv will be included in the Sri Lankan squad for the World Cup final as cover for the injured (Muttiah) Muralitharan and (Angelo) Mathews," Sri Lanka Cricket said in a statement.

Vaas, 37 and Randiv, 26, were due to fly out to Mumbai later Thursday ahead of Saturday's title match against India.

Muralitharan, who turns 39 next month, has played through the six-week tournament despite being afflicted by hamstring and groin injuries, a side strain and a troublesome knee.

All-rounder Mathews, 23, picked up a right-side strain while fielding during Tuesday's semi-final win against New Zealand.

Sri Lanka, 1996 winners and 2007 finalists, want to win the cup for legendary spinner Muralitharan who retires on Saturday after a world record haul of 800 Test and 534 one-day wickets.

Vaas, who was part of the 1996 winning team, retired from Tests in July with 322 Test and 400 one-day wickets.

He last played an international when India toured Sri Lanka in August 2008, taking the wicket of Yuvraj Singh for a duck.

Randiv, who made his one-day debut against India in 2009, has taken 22 ODI wickets. He last played when Sri Lanka toured Australia for a one-day series last year.

    C. Silva goes out -- C. Kapugedara comes in
Mendis goes out -- Vass comes in

Vaas is a reliable Tail-end batting machine

    ayyooo Thursday, 31 March 2011 10:18 AM

    Probable Team for Final

    Mathews/Vass (if mathews not fit)

    grema Thursday, 31 March 2011 12:58 PM

It will be great if they drop Murali pick up Randiv and Drop Malinga and take Vaas. Both of them should leak at least 200 runs in their allotted 20 overs. Imagine SL's middle order so brittle and if opening batsman fail which they will, our dreams of winning WC would be evaporated. This should be talked if we lankans win it. Us? Lankans? Winning it? No Chance.

    littlemanmohan Thursday, 31 March 2011 01:16 PM

hey!! wot do u guys think of indian chances? they look a much stronger and a better side...isnt it??

this is the ideal team for final
    1. Tharanga
    2. Dilshan
    3. Sanga
    4 Mahela
    6. Kapugedara
    7. Thisara perera
    8.Mathews/ Vass
9.Murali/ Mendis (if murli is not playing)

    jayantha Friday, 01 April 2011 01:19 AM

Vas was the best bowler in last Club Tournament & Provincial Tournament in term of overall figures( Wickets & Economy rate per over)

    Raja Friday, 01 April 2011 02:17 AM

Kapugedara nor Silva shouldn't have been selected in the 1st place though they were allocated permanent places in almost every ODI side since 2005 when there are enough promising young players who have better skills & maintained consistency since their schooldays. If somebody wants to replace Mathews, a player of equal skills & credentials has to be sent (Chandimal ODI Av.72 1st Cl Av. 56,KausalS 46, Dkarunarathna 46,Paranawithana 44, Thirimanne 44,AngeloPerera 39,Bhanuka).

    Ratne Friday, 01 April 2011 03:20 AM

There can be only 2 one to one replacements for injured Mathews and Murali.. Murali is likely to play... replacing others cannot be done this stage, so no point in talking about it.

    Raj Friday, 01 April 2011 03:31 AM

Thilan Samaraweera should be dropped, first, he is playing like school boy cricketer, can't handle the pressure.

    willows Friday, 01 April 2011 07:31 AM

Vaasi good luck and do it in a grand finale???

    wasantha Friday, 01 April 2011 08:00 AM

aravinda made a mistake dropping sanath.

    MagodisThuma Thursday, 31 March 2011 07:35 AM

    I agree with you.

    Abdul Thursday, 31 March 2011 06:15 AM

Randiv could be a good option, he's bowling well in the domestic season, Vaas for Mathews would be death knell

    blazinfire Thursday, 31 March 2011 06:23 AM

Why cant chamara Silva go out and Vass come in! Vass is 1000 times better than chamara. And he has played 4 world cups and he is best

    Sudharshan Thursday, 31 March 2011 06:29 AM

Great move remove one spinner and play vass he will win the cup for us coz he is a legend

    Anu Thursday, 31 March 2011 07:13 AM

Has Vass been playing any games? Is it a risk to send him in with no match practise? Is Angelo so badly injured that he cant play as a batsman? Its really bad if Angelo cant play!!
Thissara should be bought in for the match.

    Wisdom Thursday, 31 March 2011 07:15 AM

    Jix Thursday, 31 March 2011 07:26 AM

Vaas is another great that is worthy of a place and deserves a good send off like Murali, this is perfect in a way!

    Trevin Thursday, 31 March 2011 07:28 AM

    Send Jayasuriya to replace Chamara

    sinhalaya Thursday, 31 March 2011 07:40 AM

chamara silva should be dropped and any replacement of him is worthwhile. he is a passenger. no other changes should be made

    Jumjoom Thursday, 31 March 2011 07:42 AM

the umpire Thursday, 31 March 2011 07:49 AM

Chamara silva must be replaced by some one. Thissara or vassy can play instead of him. Dont know why he is getting picked up?!!!!

    prabath Thursday, 31 March 2011 07:40 AM

    Exactly ...

    prabath Thursday, 31 March 2011 07:57 AM
