The US today said that it is in the process of helping and will further assist those affected by floods in Sri Lanka. US Ambassador Patricia A. Butenis announced that the United States Government is donating nearly $300,000 in assistance to provide a variety of goods and services to the people hardest hit by the flood disaster.

Further, a US press release noted -

“In order to help the nearly 1 million Sri Lankans affected by the recent floods and landslides, Ambassador Patricia A. Butenis announced that the United States Government is donating nearly $300,000 in assistance to provide a variety of goods and services to the people hardest hit by the disaster.

This aid has already provided boats to local governments in Batticaloa to evacuate people in the hardest-hit areas.  We are also helping the government to identify the families in need and to make an accurate assessment of the situation.  In addition, we are distributing emergency relief supplies—including bottled water, cooking materials, tarpaulins, and other necessary items—to thousands of families in Batticaloa, Trincomalee, and Ampara districts.  The U.S. Government will continue to monitor the situation closely.” (Daily Mirror online)

WOW....The global superpower giving Rs 3000 per person what a joke......

    common Sunday, 16 January 2011 06:11 AM

Why do other countries have to give Sri Lanka the aid? What do you expect from them? To donate all their budget to you to the country that has not done anything for them? You just love to take, how many times SL give to others? They show their humanitarian sympathy by donating something is good enough.

The tea given to Australia, must have been to be thrown in the trash bin. Some rabbish.

If you don't want even this, say so.

Why are beggars complaining without thanking any amount of aid given. In any case why should any country give us aid when we harangue & insult them all the time. Just be happy we are getting any aid. Ask the question? Do we deserve any aid?

Ruwan Fernando Saturday, 15 January 2011 08:13 PM

Let's make SL a country that doesn't need to go around with the begging bowl to China, USA or wherever ... hard work needed guys not armchair pundits.

    It's all about attitude...

    Fair N Square Saturday, 15 January 2011 08:04 PM

The amount of TEA sent by the SL govt To Australia via one single company(DILMAH) is more than the US $300,000 sent by the govr of USA............ and ppl call USA generous?????

    Fair N Square Saturday, 15 January 2011 07:59 PM

    POL ADI

    Thas Saturday, 15 January 2011 07:56 PM

No cash to Govt of SL please. It's better, if the relief items is distributed by someone from the US Embassey, or under the supervion at least.

USA does not have money to spend ...... Thats why China is buying US debts in U$ Billions.....

    dilan Saturday, 15 January 2011 06:29 PM

USA the fading Superpower is running out of money.......

    raj Saturday, 15 January 2011 05:24 PM

US should keep in mind that higher level people can rob the aid and preventing it reaching it to the affected people.

    nagu Saturday, 15 January 2011 04:14 PM

USA is a sliding Superpower.....Lets get help from China...The Next SUPERPOWER......

    nagu Saturday, 15 January 2011 04:01 PM

The global superpower giving peanuts ......What a joke....

loku podi guru Saturday, 15 January 2011 09:49 AM

Now watch! Next come the USA bashers to say the Ambassador is covering her tracks left by Wikileaks. Where's the aid from Portugal, the Netherlands and the U.K.? No doubt, there will be assistance from many quarters. Moral: don't look the gift horse in the mouth, if you are tempted to do so.

    nagu Saturday, 15 January 2011 03:57 PM

    butter after ......Wikileaks....

    Rajitha Saturday, 15 January 2011 03:48 PM

of course US should donate in order to off-set the sri lanka's orientation towards china.
they just can't afford to let china have SL

loku podi guru Saturday, 15 January 2011 01:54 PM

And what was it I said about bashing and looking gift-horses in the mouth at the beginning of this string of comments? I don't think this is a loan any more than the ambulances donated to the S. L. Army a few weeks back.

    Jathimamaka Saturday, 15 January 2011 01:35 PM

local boy, why should we depend of aid from US, how much has China given us ? you can get another loan from china at 9%

    Royalist Saturday, 15 January 2011 12:40 PM

Put another 5/- bucks and you can get one coconut... US is giving us Pol Aid!

local boy Saturday, 15 January 2011 12:10 PM

Sarath, why can't you do simple mathematics ? remember 1 million people effected . So 3 laks divided by 1 million would gives you $0.3 US dollars. Hope you can calculate Rs at least now.

    Lal Saturday, 15 January 2011 11:58 AM

    Assuming 1USD = 100LKR
    USD 300,000 = LKR 30,000,000
per person (assuming 1 million ppl) = 30,000,000/1 mill ppl

= LKR 30!!! Simple Maths Sarath..

    Sathees Saturday, 15 January 2011 11:58 AM

Sarath Local boy was correct... yeah.. US gives peanuts in aids and also blocks others from giving more!
Also stops anyprograms in SL that might affects employment of their citizens though SL is 30 yrs behind US.. They are superpower...

    Cobra Saturday, 15 January 2011 11:54 AM

Finally it will be 'Ape lokkange nama, Americave hama'!!!!

    Sarath Saturday, 15 January 2011 11:11 AM

local boy, the amount is 300,000 dollars and not rupees! so, it's Rs. 3000 person.

    How much have you given?

    Myopic Saturday, 15 January 2011 10:07 AM

UK aid is coming through EU, check the sites. How much of this aid will reach those who need it and not the politcians.

local boy Saturday, 15 January 2011 09:56 AM

    Thank you USA, I'll get 300,000/1,000,000 =$ 0.3 = Rs 30.
