The UNP today stressed that the government should take steps to prevent foreign intervention in the internal affairs of the country, by ensuring good governance and strengthening democracy.
Addressing the weekly press conference, UNP Media Spokesman MP Gayantha Karunatilake said that his party opposed the appointment of an expert panel to look into alleged human rights violations in Sri Lanka.
“As a party, we vehemently oppose this move by the UN. However, it has now been appointed. Valiant soldiers who fought this war did not commit anything wrong that paves the way for international intervention. The government failed to implement the 17th Amendment and reactivate the independent commissions,” MP Karunatilake said.
He said that issues of international concern could not be addressed through the fiery political rhetoric which is normally used by ruling party politicians to whip up emotions in the electorate.

Sajith Premadasa is playing a dangerous game - fishing in troubled waters.

Are the Constitutions of the SLFP, JVP, JHU, SLMC, TNA, PA, LSSP, CP etc. etc. democratic?

Foreign advise was first obtained by Chandrika when she brought in the Norwegians.

UNP leader appears to be deaf & dumb. He and JJ are the main culprits who have instigated the western Govts against Sri Lanka. Sajith Premadasa has already expressed his views. What does UNP say to that.

Good governance? I don't think the president knows neither the spelling nor the meaning of this word. He relies only on corruption, political favours and manipulations
Ind Monday, 28 June 2010 10:40 AM
If my memory is right, UNP once said that this should have international intervension.
Ruwan Monday, 28 June 2010 09:51 AM
Statement is correct' If goverance is not correct, as main opposion party why don't you actively against it.

I think the leadership of UNP is changed. Now they are telling something National Peace Council Jehan Perera.

It is correct that we need our own home spun solutions to these problems but we do not have leaders who are capable or willing to find such answers. All I can pray for is God bless my Country and save it from any further disasters.

What about its own governance? Is it good or bad?
Gayan Samarasekara Monday, 28 June 2010 07:02 AM
Yes, this is the most practical and intelligent way that the country could be prevented from external interventions.
KD Monday, 28 June 2010 07:53 AM
Finally top guy in UNP said something meaningful. It's amazing how the supporters turned "Anti foreign intervention" overnight.
MK Monday, 28 June 2010 07:53 AM
Before talking about 'good governance of this country, make sure you govern and get rid undemocratic constitution within your own party.
Kumar Wijayasekara Monday, 28 June 2010 07:39 AM
The position taken by the UNP on this issue is perfectly right.
Jagath Monday, 28 June 2010 07:39 AM
This is the need of the hour without just protesting and critiisicing foreign governments. This government does not know the meaning of " Good Governence"
Romesh Banda Monday, 28 June 2010 07:38 AM
It is the UNP that went for foreign advise and messed up everything. Our problems need home grown solutions .
It is sad that the Opposition are trying to wash dirty linen overseas.
This advise is to cover up what they have done in the past and that is why people continue to reject them. .

Totally agree those are conditions that should prevail in any law abiding democratic country. But now the problem is after having them dictated by another organization how to implement with dignity and selfrespect. Minister, think twice before uttering foolish statements to get into good books of the President. There is no point in trying to be a hero by doing it, you will only end up as a Cardboard Tarzen.

Jokers of the Nation....!!!
I Hussein Monday, 28 June 2010 07:19 AM
In other words UNP is giving the massage that there shall be foreign intervention. Good governance and democracy is a dream to expect from this govt.
They might even release SF without any charges as the govt is under tremendous pressure, mounting day by day from all sides. After all the govt plonkers got no respect or dignity so anything can happen.
Calistus Jayatilleke Monday, 28 June 2010 07:11 AM
Yes, agree. Thats the biggest problem with this government that its members love their own voice and most of them suffer from verbal diahorrea. They just enjoy the thrills of playing to the gallery when addressing political rallies to show the hoi-polloi how heroic and brave they are when confronting the "Suddhas", i.e. rebuking everything that is foreign in Sinhala without realising that one day they have to go and negotiate with the very same "Suddhas" in English!
