The United National Party (UNP) hopes to work in a united manner for the Local Government Elections. “We hope to work together as one team and support all our leaders in order to make the Local Government Elections victory for the UNP,” UNP MP Thalatha Athukorala told the Daily Mirror.

She further stated that until after the elections the UNP would put the appointment of a new leader on the backburner. “Now that the Local Government Elections have been announced we don’t intend on giving any prominence to the appointment of a new leader. We don’t want to distract the people from the main issue at hand. Since we have till the 12th of April to appoint a new leader”, she said.

The UNP adopted a new constitution on the 12th of December last year, where the directives for the appointment of a new leader were laid out.

The government dissolved all local government bodies on Thursday. The elections to some 330 local bodies including Municipal Councils, Town Councils and Pradeshiya Sabhas are to be held on March 12. The elections Department will call for the nominations from the 20th to the 27th of January. (Dianne Silva)

Yes, UNITED until the Polls, and after the defeat, DEVIDED again and in-fighting starts. So, it is MR's govt. that unites the UNP by declaring Polls.

    Sumal Friday, 07 January 2011 01:15 PM

UNP will lose the election and Sajith will takeover the party naturally. Ranil has to allow appointments of new leaders before election if he does not want humiliation. Very few can understand this.

Aney mandha Friday, 07 January 2011 12:41 PM

    I Hussein Friday, 07 January 2011 12:35 PM

Newly United-United National Party - UUNP?
Take some initiative to show that Sajith would be the new leader. Things will improve for sure.
