UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told at a news conference a short while ago that the party will boycott the Independence Day celebrations. He said there is nothing to celebrate when the war hero who delivered the nation from terrorism is in prison, and rights of the people and media are suppressed.

UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekera who also participated in the conference said the party would hold a candlelight vigil calling for the release of former Army commander Sarath Fonseka on that day. (YP)

Does the concept on "Independence" have much significance or even meaning to the present generation ?

Wouldn't it be better to have a "development" day when the year on year development ( or lack thereof) is assessed in the form of an exhibition ?

Then the government could be held accountable !
