The main opposition UNP said that they would boycott tomorrow’s swearing in ceremony of President Mahinda Rajapaksa for his second term as a mark of protest against the government’s extravagant spending in this respect.

UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya told a news conference that the successive leaders starting from late Prime Minister D.S. Senanayake to former President Chandrika Kumaratunga had conducted their swearing in ceremonies in a simple and modest manner.

Mr. Jayasuriya noted that though President Rajapaksa is entitled to have ceremony, it should not be done at the cost of state coffers. (KB)

All these extravaganza are only among the government supporters but not for the poor man who is struggling make ends meet. Government should cut down on tamashas and should look after the needy.

    ajja Friday, 19 November 2010 01:43 AM

UNP is good at boycotting every thing including their own convrnton.Mr.jayasuriya you are rning out to be a pupet and a mans whose voice is going to the wilderness.

    Karthik Thursday, 18 November 2010 10:59 AM

Even the US president sworn in with a simple speech where a large crowd gathered and listened to his speech. That’s all… But tomorrow we might see military parade, music and dancing parade, air force jets flying here and there, worlds largest kiribath cooked by 500 chefs, what else… should wait and see the drama

    dn Thursday, 18 November 2010 07:35 AM

    Correct.

    king6 Friday, 19 November 2010 07:41 AM

    gamini Thursday, 18 November 2010 07:54 AM

Certainly, they will always have a excuse to boycott the ceremony. This is not the first time !!

    Cyril E Thursday, 18 November 2010 07:55 AM

Must be they are very concerned in finding time to attend the opening ceremony of harbour at Polonnaruwa

    Mr.Copycat Thursday, 18 November 2010 07:56 AM

Ela Kiri! That's good, they are wasting public money, why can't he do the ceremony simply and telecast it live without spending so much of funds unnecessarily?

    Saradial Thursday, 18 November 2010 08:00 AM

    net Thursday, 18 November 2010 08:11 AM

Karu singing the same old song like in past. These nuts will not attend for anything which will come good for Sri lanka because nothing goes to their pockets.

    hb Thursday, 18 November 2010 08:11 AM

Planting trees, opening the OPD till night are are all good. But I would have been happy if my tax money was used to relieve the suffering of the people who were displaced in the war than being wasted for the tamasha.

    Nonsence Thursday, 18 November 2010 08:12 AM

Anyway, you cannot, because he is not the president who won..... not because of the extravagant spending.

But you never know RW might show his spinelessness

    Nilantha Thursday, 18 November 2010 08:14 AM

How about Ex president JR, Mr Premadasa...? to my understanding there were ceremonies too.

    sam Thursday, 18 November 2010 08:15 AM

Instead of winning elections, try win heart of the people by boycotting....Not a bad move Mr Karu

Yes he is a failed leader, no one listen to him; just talk nonsense every day, some times Ranil is better than this Karu.

    spark Thursday, 18 November 2010 08:23 AM

Those ceremonies were not extravagant to these limits. The ceremony by MR could be a guiness world record, if their is any fellow with the guts to account for it and show.

Sad Sack Thursday, 18 November 2010 08:25 AM

Colombo is recovering from the heavy floods experienced last week....it would have been appropriate if substantial amount is allocated to the displaced families, this will bring in more joy and happiness to the public...something to think about...

NADARAJAH SETHURUPAN Thursday, 18 November 2010 08:26 AM

Does anyone know what this "extravagant" ceremony will be? Or is this just assumption?

Smart Aleck Thursday, 18 November 2010 09:15 AM

He is entitled to have the swearing but he should settle the entire cost from Private and Family Funds.

Smart Aleck Thursday, 18 November 2010 09:17 AM

That type of invitation comes only before Elections.

    sxhabeeb Friday, 19 November 2010 09:54 AM

The Mahida Chintanaya says, that MR Goverment stop Waste of Money, and Eradicate corruptions. So IF Premadasa did some thing its not necessary others should follow. These all expenses from our hardly earned Tax.

how much is the crown costing , MR need to see a doctor

    Sidath B Thursday, 18 November 2010 01:15 PM

I too do not agree IF MR govt has WASTED lot of money on this.
But UNP on the other hand anyway find an excuse to boycott as they have done in the past. Sri Lankans have lost their faith in total with UNP and this type of gimmick surely not the answer.

    Saradial Thursday, 18 November 2010 09:29 AM

They should boycott the ceromony because of Election Frauds he did to Elect which are completely illegal.

    AZ Thursday, 18 November 2010 09:35 AM
