Navi Pillai, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has told a gathering in Dublin, Ireland that her office is in a clear understanding that national investigations in Sri Lanka "have not worked so far".

Speaking in Dublin, Ireland, she added that UN Secretary General Ban ki-Moon is "seriously committed to getting President Rajapaksa to comply with the undertaking he gave to the Secretary General."

The High Commissioner confirmed that she recently met Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe in Geneva.

"It seems that everybody was waiting for the election to be over, and so that is what I reminded him," she said.

"The position that Sri Lanka has the unique office of a ministry for HR I thought places a particular responsibility on the minister of HR should talk to his own government not only on post conflict rights violations but post election rights violations."

Expressing "disappointment" that the issue of alleged war crimes in Sri Lanka was not properly addressed at the UNHRC, she said it is an important vehicle on which states can take measures on rights violations of another country.

Denying war crimes allegations, the Sri Lanka government says it will not allow any international investigations.

In an interview with the BBC, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said he would nto allow any such investigation as “there is no reason.”

But the former military chief Gen Sarath Fonseka has said he will testify at an international hearing. (BBC)

    well said Madam,

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 06:24 AM

On the 13th of February 2010, US & UK Troops launched a massive military offensive in Afghanistan displacing millions of innocent people. Lord knows how many of them will die. What does Navaneetham Pillai have to say about this? My guess is she will be deaf and mute about atrocities committed by her masters! However, being a true lackey of the West she will try her best to dicredit small nations like Sri Lanka who successfully defeated TERRORISM! SHAME ON YOU Mrs.Pillai!

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 06:28 AM

No one is confident about anybody after realizing what is happening behind the screen. UN is not confident about SL and vice versa.

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 06:28 AM

MR thinks to handle the ethnic issue like in Mianmar. In Mianmar minority peoples rights are denied under military rule.

Many minority groups have to learn the majority language and minority groups lives under fear.
What MR bros do not understand is that Mianmar is one of the worst developed country (which was a rice bowl of Asia). Now SL people elected MR for second term by mistake.

As everybody people have to face the problems for their mistakes.

SL needs atleast 40 years, to become like Singhapore, if the growth is consistant..... But... not crime list leaders and with protest war....

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 06:38 AM

All you Sri Lankan have no ethics or moral to talk about. HR! Only go to UN and agencies with your begging bowl!

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 06:39 AM

    All have to have justice?
We have seen clearly in srilanka no human rights at all, illegal arrests, no media freedom, abduct writers and speakers, false propaganda by ministers, misleading information to public, Supreme court commented police is not doing their duties impartially, army and Defense secretary violate the law, unlawful detention, court orders not carrying out by Government, prominent Buddhist and religious leaders commented no democracy, election commissioner not acting fairly, no answers to people, no transparency and no accountability for development funds and aids, lasanth wikranmsingher murder is still investigating after one year, where is the justice or liberty for freedom of human rights in srilanka?

    Do these exist in srilanks?

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 06:46 AM

hi srilankan i assume you are not tamil.still persons like you are rasist.she is tamil because of that you said she is bias.so how can any sinhalese person will solve tamil issue honestly.pls to be true SRILANKAN

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 06:48 AM

When two groups of protesters take to the streets the politicised Police attack the anti Government protesters with rubber bullets tear gas and high pressue water canons. Where is Human Rights in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is slowly but surely turning another Myanmar where a human rights activist is under house arrest for years..

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 06:56 AM

Navi Pillai, you are with us ................ We were with you ..........

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 06:57 AM

Mrs Pillai, why are you silent about the forceful occupation and crimes committed in Afganistahan & Iraq by western forces. We Sri Lankans fought for our sovereignty and independence. Loser like SF can betrayal the motherland and its forces. But Sri Lankans will be united and face all odds

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 07:03 AM

When Mrs. Pillai did not get her prefered outcome, she still complains about SL. We could remember the UN bringing a motion against SL and losing in the human rights council.
Just wonder any investigations worked so far in places like Iraq where over one million people have been killed so far.
The saddest thing is Sri Lankans forget there was a war in in SL and no one is dying any more. There is freedom for travel to north and east as well. We have all problmes with UN and the west, due to the fact our own people like SF planning to betray the country.

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 07:14 AM

She is of TAMIL BLOOD. Y O U are of SINHALA BLOOD. One does not accept the other. BUT TRUTH SHALL PREVAIL.

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 07:16 AM

Sri Lankan Govts has a history of blaming someone to distract the electorate from bad governance. It was LTTE over the last 25 years. Now it is going to be Sarath Fonseka for the next few years. What will they come up with next?

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 06:22 AM

How to trust his Govt ??????? When the UN Geral Secratart called MR 2 days back to discuss the arrest of Geral Fonseka what did the GOvt Infomation Centre release said - "He called the president TO Congratulate him for the victory" He has warned him for all the mal practicess - what r asking from International community - sanctions???? Please please our motherland should not be haressed due to these Culprit Govt. GOD PROTECT OUR MOTHERLAND !!!

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 07:33 AM

Well said Ms. Pillai. Now it's time for action.

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 07:34 AM

It is nonsens. If she have Tamil blood and not give justice to sinhalease. Then how a sinhalese blood give justice to Tamil? If we think in this line let every ethic group see their own affaires without other ethnic harassment

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 07:35 AM

Though late wisdom, at last a sane voice from the UN.

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 07:37 AM

Sri Lankan, you does not seems to know about blood groups.. There is nothing called Tamil Blood, Muslim Blood, Etc Etc. There is only "A Group" "B Group" "AB Group" and "O Group" Blood. If you don't know, you should not talk.

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 07:39 AM

Her duty is to issue this type of statements. Don't take these things seriously. Only to satysfy her clients.

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 07:41 AM

    Weel said
    Thanks

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 07:44 AM

Who is THE FOOL ?? The person who said that Norway and US gave money to General Fonseka for election campaign.???

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 07:45 AM

Come on lets not be narrow minded MR SriLankan This is the whole problem with us Sri Lankans

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 07:48 AM

If things do not work well for Sri Lankans, why would they vote the same President in with a big majority.

Mr. Pillai does not make any sense. How on earth UN survive with such people at the top.

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 07:51 AM

We should not be surprise about the comments made by this person. She worked so hard to nail down Sri Lanka on War crimes. She is biased and corrupt. UN must look to replace her with a credible person who will be able to maintain the integrity and impartiality of the organization.

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 07:56 AM

Sadly, the Minister is charge of Human Rights is only interested in his rights. Not the rights of others. He goes around telling all and sundry that the International Organizations are spreading lies, and only the GOSL tells the truth. What can you do with such lousy politicians that we have deceived the voters. Gaod too cannot save us from these politicians!!!

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 05:57 AM

UN is making statements why not initiate some positive actions such as challenging the government to release GSF to testify at an International hearing. Gota's last statement says it all, the fear of investigations. Naturally the guilty would be.

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 05:04 AM

What HR in Srilanaka when former Army commander/CDS was taken out of HIS home and dragged on the floor like an animal. How can an average civilian expect HR justice. Please ,Please help us UN.

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 05:05 AM

That's true. Investigations in Sri Lanka "have not worked so far" for Ms Pillai. Not even the UN security councils decisions worked so far to fill her hearts desires. Keep trying lady.

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 05:16 AM

The very fact that Human Rights are taken care of by a disastrous Minister of Disasters is in itself proof that they dont care for any such rights. This is all hog wash. The whole government consists of a pack of liars who just survive for the moment by fabricating lies and escaping on every occasion.

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 05:23 AM

She is of TAMIL BLOOD!!! What is the Ethical right that she has to talk about this issue as she is bias. Why do FOOLS believe her?

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 05:43 AM

    Hey Uragodage,
You are still in colonial age and asking for an American intervention. Bloody shame.

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 05:48 AM

"National investigations have not worked so far", says Ms.Pillai.
Seems that the problem here is that the fox is the one investigating who ate the chicken.......

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 05:50 AM

    Hi Sri Lanka
Why are you vomiting a venom of racism?. Why do you look at her ethinicity? Rather look at what she says. Fools like you sow seeds of racism and never the country be in peace.
    SJ

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 05:53 AM

Comments are made mainly by the English educated minority living in the cities. The majority living in the rural sector are behind the incumbent President as was amply made clear by the recent elections.
We have an independent judiciary and if Sarath Fonseka has done no wrong he would be exonerated

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 05:55 AM

Hello Sri Lankan. Blood is in RED colour. There is no different any community. You are a Big FOOL. I think you didn't know about your blood. What a shame !!!!!!!!!

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 05:56 AM

When he was with the UNP, you worshiped him. Didn't you?
    Hypocrisy at it's best !!

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 05:56 AM

At last the bloody war is over. Give our country some time to prove. Till then mind ur own businesses or just put ur energy n time into investigating Iraq problem. see if you have courage to prove human rights violations,... Get a job. Dont just represent UNHRC to have a career. What a bunch of garbage heads.

These type os tamils always wanted to help those war lords to seperate the island. Navi pillai n those idiots you all are Loser n cowards to the end

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 05:03 AM

The last line of this news item is the crux & mother of all problems.

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 05:57 AM

Acts of SL is making problems complicated day by day. We should be concious and diplomatic atleast at this stage. There is a limit of resisting the international pressure. Please think of the country first.

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 05:58 AM

Now with the arrest of SF and he being really angry don't know what else will he say in public. We as Sri Lankan are in big trouble....common UN its war is USA OR UN probing everything happening in AFGAN AND IRAQ......?

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 06:03 AM

The world has evolved and we must go forward disregarding primitive ethnic differences. Tamils are also "Sri Lankans" and we should not treat them as second class citizens. By the way there is nothing called Tamil blood or Sinhala blood. There on 4 “human” blood groups-A, B, AB & O.

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 06:07 AM

Sri Lankan your comment is very racial and it is people of your calibre who bring ruin to this country. Are you of pure sinhalese blood???? Ask your ancestors and there will be someone who has inter married to a different community. Who cares which blood one belongs to ?? In that case all sinhalese have Indian blood as Vijaya is Indian origin. Be mature in your outlook please. This country has gone through enough because of poeple like you.

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 06:11 AM

Mr Srilankan, If you cant believe Pillai since she is a TAMIL BLOOD why the hell we tamils have to believe the Government as it is SINHALA BLOOD!!

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 06:12 AM

Read the last line. When the former Army Commander expresses doubts, how can we blame Pillai ? What the General has done was unforgivable. He has betrayed the entire country. No leader sacrefices his own men for personal gains.

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 06:12 AM

Has this Givt been able o make confidence of others? From what they do and behave can any body TRUST them? Its very clear they preach one and practive the TOTALLY THE OPPOSIT!!! If u select the BEST CREATIVES or BEST NOVEL WRITTERS - Its is MRs Govt with far best- no one can beat them !!! Dear Sons/ Daughters of OUR MOTHER LAND, Lets protect our beloved motherland from all these culprits ... Rally round together and do not let the MR and teh gang to remain any more...

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 06:14 AM

If tehre are no HR violations, then why should we fear to cooperate with UNHR....

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 06:14 AM

So what right does a Sinhalease have to talk about the issue. You are biased. By the same token, it is the very reason why internal government investigation will fail. Sinhalease are biased per your argument.

    Saturday, 13 February 2010 06:15 AM
