TNA welcomes international mediation for future negotiations

In the backdrop of a deadlock in talks between the government and the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), the TNA said yesterday that they would welcome an international mediation at this time to facilitate future negotiations.

At a recent meeting with Dr. Alyssa Ayres, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian affairs, TNA MP Selvam Adaikkalanathan and P. Sritharan called for a facilitator role by the US in this respect.

Asked for a comment, TNA Media Spokesman MP Suresh Premachandran said that his party welcomes such international facilitation if possible.  Mr. Premachandran said that it could be the United National, the Commonwealth Association, the SAARC or the European Union.

“There is no favoured choice in this case.  However, we are for an external facilitator if the government is willing,” he said.      Yet, he said that the TNA had not officially called for such intervention at the moment.

There is a stalemate in talks at the moment after the government insisted that the TNA should nominate its members to the Parliamentary Select Committee for the evolution of a political party in consensus with all the parties in Parliament.  The TNA has made reservations over its participation in this case.

In late 1990s, former President Chandrika Kumaratunga invited Norway to play of the role of facilitator for talks between the government and the LTTE.  The UNP that came to power in 2001 also accepted the Norwegian role and initiated peace talks with the LTTE after signing a peace accord.  The accord was abrogated after President Mahinda Rajapaksa came to power in 2005. The government was critical of the role played by Norway. (Kelum Bandara)

Government should place TNA in its place and not allow to play communal politics. They are the political wing of LTTE and is the government too weak to do that?

True Vimal. All Sri lankans shuld understand that no outsiders shuld decide what is best for sri lanka.

    Nodrog Sunday, 29 January 2012 05:21 AM

    Agreed. Well said.

    Roshan Sunday, 29 January 2012 04:36 AM

I do agree with you that 'TNA is racist '. So what about JHU are they not?

    appu Sunday, 29 January 2012 04:16 AM

then sinhalese to be deported back to Oriza

    gemba Sunday, 29 January 2012 12:49 AM

Government failed to win this war on its own. Many international country provided their assistance and hence they are under moral duty to get involved and forced the government for agreeable settlement.

Don Sarath Sunday, 29 January 2012 12:06 AM

TNA just like LTTE wants a mediator similer to Norwey. Sri Lanka has learnt enough bitter lessons from such mediators in the past. If TNA wants mediators it has to be from several countries, each from US, UK, China, Russia, India and Pakistan/ Middle Eastern country.

TNA wants USA to mediate as their LTTE Diaspora can influence the US Lgislarors with their ill gotton money.

    This should never be allowed.

Nicky Rasaputra Saturday, 28 January 2012 11:41 PM

Is is very sad that the TNA 's LTTE mentality is causing serious harm to the future of the Tamil community in Sri-Lanka. It continues to antagonise the Government (plus the silent majority) by trying to drag in various foreign forces to pressurise Govt. to grant "Land & Police powers" to North and East. Even if govt. becomes rather indifferent on this topic, it is a fact that the majority of the country's population (not exclusively Sinhalese) WILL NEVER allow this to happen. So Mr.Sambandan & TNA should now start thinking very carefully and very seriously, that Tamils anywhere in the country NOW can genuinly lead a peaceful, dignified, confident and prosperous life without " Eelamic Powers" !

    faqi Saturday, 28 January 2012 07:47 PM

Not a good idea to involve foreigners in these negotiations.

    colombol Saturday, 28 January 2012 07:07 PM

What?? why should we need international mediation ?.

    Thomas Saturday, 28 January 2012 03:11 AM

    Good idea, Welcome

    raj Saturday, 28 January 2012 05:39 PM

there is no need for international mediation since peace talk with norway mediation has failed. Instead, we need public peac talk so we will know what they are talking behind doors. All peace talk should be telecasted so public can give own judgement. Otherwise, there will be no success. There is nothing to hide if there each party is honest.

    marino Saturday, 28 January 2012 04:54 PM

Amila what is the will of the mejority why don't some one spell it out clearly

Chaminda Tilakumara Saturday, 28 January 2012 04:12 PM

TNA just like the UNP, does not know how to work with the majority thinking.

    shan Saturday, 28 January 2012 02:42 PM

Mr Carlos You & me are same idea but GOV is doing nothing?

Lanke Banda Saturday, 28 January 2012 06:12 AM

GOSL must reject this. Let TNA discuss with TN to get their so called deprived equal rights.

    faqi Saturday, 28 January 2012 06:08 AM

Its the worst decision to call for intervention by foreign governments. Remember the fiasco by the Norwegians in the past? We should solve our own problems. It appears the TNA wants to complicate matters and start another round of troubles by involving foreigners.

    Nodrog Saturday, 28 January 2012 05:14 AM

You are not looking for a facilitator but someone to fight on your behalf to get your selfish impractical demands from the GOSL.

    Amila.G Saturday, 28 January 2012 04:50 AM

One thing is certain . Government will never bow down to foreign pressure or go against the will of the mejority Where these matters are concern.

    Amila.G Saturday, 28 January 2012 04:42 AM

Who ever mediates final say will be with the government of Sri Lanka ,This will go on for many summers for sure ,Due to the fact that TNA Won`t be satisfied with what is offered other than what they want.

    Nodrog Saturday, 28 January 2012 04:20 AM

Quit stalling and get on with the job.

Vimal Carlos Saturday, 28 January 2012 03:55 AM

The goverment won the war, no need for outsiders to get involved.

Nicky Karunarathna Saturday, 28 January 2012 03:26 AM

Another foreign intervention and another CFA? Who ever intervene, they should recomend that, Tamils who cannot live in symbiotic reletionship with majority to be deported back to Tamil Nadu. When these Tamils goes to other countries also ask all these demands like in SL, such as in Canada, Australia, UK and also in large number in Fiji? GOSL should not give anything but ask them to live like any other citizen in the country or get out. Otherwise like North and East, they will ask Colombo also as they are the majority. So these stupid demands with their ultrior motive - where its going to stop? These Tamils are most racist lot living in the whole world. Their racism and calling them 24/7 Tamil, Tamil and nothing but the Tmail is disgusting to entire humanity and human race!
