Police used tear gas to control a clash between two groups of the Ananda and Nalanda Colleges in Colombo during their big match at the SSC ground, a short while ago, police said.

They said following the tear gas, students started to disperse peacefully. Security has been tightened in the area, police said.

On Saturday, the Police Headquarters announced that legal action will be taken against students and other groups who behave indecently during the ongoing big match season.

Police Spokesman SSP P.M. H. B. Siriwardena issuing a statement on Saturday said special teams have been deployed in Colombo and other major cities to look into violations of traffic laws and harassment of school students by the big-match aficionados.

the real problem lies behind the admission criteria. these schools used to have strict criterias earlier, only students with good family backgrounds are taken. now the admission is so simple you can get in as soon as you pay more than usual donation. so all the vanaathayas ruin the school.. same with royal and Thomas. via DM Android App

i am not surprised the respect given to the elders from our younger generation has deteriorated something has to done about that. parents and teachers must take most of the blame.

What do you expect.. When the rulers of the ountry let their own children behave like this and openly make statements like "Boys will be Boys". What do you expect seriously??

Andrew Pitugaland Monday, 04 March 2013 03:59 AM

BOYS WILL BE BOYS - Isn't is the Government policy ? Then why use tear gas? Let the fight go on while the match also goes on !!!!!

Buffaloa Citizen Monday, 04 March 2013 03:34 AM

The students of these two schools were also great participants in the 1983 riots. At that time, it was termed heroism and patriotism. Today these two schools have become the scum of the countries discipline, mainly catering to indiscipline and sheer corruption of the country.

    apsal Monday, 04 March 2013 03:22 AM

Majority of Sri Lankan doesn't have discipline. it's not only in Schools, even in abroad.

Big matches means clashes for a cheeththa redda. There have been clashes in the past. But tear gas and rubber bullets were never used. Obviously, this will be the future of Sri Lanka. Clashes and clashes every where. Miracle of Asia. via DM Android App

Laughing out loud at Janaka and to all the guys who have talked to follow Royalists and Thomians!!!And feeling so poor about them because it seems they doesn't know a thing about big matches and the history of the big matches!!!Ananda & Nalanda had the most discipline in big match history until this happened and this is the 1st time these two schools have clashed in this way,I've seen more bigger fights between schools during the big match sessions in previous years continuously...But yea these things shouldn't have happened in future! But then again like most people have commented above i'd like to say ''Boys will be boys''

    Duracharya Sunday, 03 March 2013 06:27 PM

This is really sad. As an Old Anadian I am really sad. Our time we had enough naughty boys coming from all corners of the country but never an incidence like this. We had big matches in P Sara . not in SSC. But our discipline was so high and both schools never been fighting.MInd you we used Nalanda grounds for Ananda matches. Nalanda dressing room was our team dressing room when we played with visitors. All blame should go to two principles and Prefects of both schools.

    Warna Sunday, 03 March 2013 06:05 PM

Why should other schools suffer bcoz of indiscipline of two schools. In our big match Joe-Pete we don't have even have separate tents even. We stay together and cheer both schools and most importantly we cheer good cricket and sportsmanship. I have being to Joe-Pete big matches in past 15 years and we never had a fight. And we love to hang out and get to know guys from our brother school.

They were only undergoing Military Training, as most of them join the Armed Forces, on leaving school. The dropouts are also trained to repeat, what they did during the 1983 riots. I do not agree with the saying Boys Are Boys. In the good old days things of this nature occurred.. Boys are the ones that participated in those matches too.

    Ravi Monday, 04 March 2013 07:54 AM

Mr Media Minister why don' t call the police and tell them not interferer in boys matters. You understand better than any one else in cabinet.

    Anver Sunday, 03 March 2013 02:17 PM

Such minor incidents are common during big matches and everything becomes normal in a few days. Tear gassing or arresting should be taken only as a last resort. BOYS WILL BE BOYS!

This is part of big match last day, keeping some memories who leaving the school.....

    MountainLion Sunday, 03 March 2013 03:36 PM

I agree with you. A lot of boys from these two schools join the forces. This has been the case for decades. I am an old boy of one of these schools and at school related functions there is three minute silence observed for the once who left us.

    janaka Sunday, 03 March 2013 03:35 PM

Shame the situation in the country is getting bad to worst. President please ask the Police to give a Full report and ban the Big Match between these two school for next 5 years.

Sad. First time I have ever heard Tear Gas used in a school Big Match.

    MountainLion Sunday, 03 March 2013 03:27 PM

I was at the match. It was a typical case of indiscipline tricking down to the schools. There is no rule of law and discipline in the country starting from the top. It is time for a change and a big one before it is too late.

    MountainLion Sunday, 03 March 2013 03:25 PM

    Lal Sunday, 03 March 2013 03:42 PM

According to Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, 'Boys are Boys and if someone hits them they will hit back'. So why make a big fuss when two groups of boys from two schools did fight at the Cricket Grounds. Is it comparable with a Ministers son and fifteen others hit an innocent man who had come to have a sea bath with his family?

    ranjan Sunday, 03 March 2013 02:10 PM

national schools....but no discipline (where it is)????
