The police said today that they have detected a tendency in killings of isolated elderly women in the country. Similar incidents have taken place in the recent past in Wellampitiya and Medawachchiya, the police said.

“The police stations have been informed about such incidents and we are telling the public to be more aware of these incidents," police media spokesman Ajith Rohana said.

The killings had taken place where unidentified persons had entered their houses to carry out robberies.

Some of the killings had been carried out by a single person and others were carried out with involvement of two to three persons. “Police have taken every step to counter these incidents and we want the help of public to track down such criminals,” he said.

According to the police the suspects carried out these unfortunate killings after tracking the victim for a considerable time period. A number of suspects have being identified and were taken into custody. “No incidents of rape were reported in connection with the killings,” he said. (Supun Dias)
