Kilinochchi District Secretary Mrs. Rupawathie Ketheeswaran said that a special programme will be held for issuing temporary identity cards for those who are eligible to vote at the local government elections in the Kilinochchi District where 60% registered voters consisting 61,217 have no National Identity Cards.
Their identity cards have been lost during the conflict period. The District Secretary said that within a couple of days, action will be taken to issue temporary ID cards to the voters.
Elections are to be held for the Pradeshiya Sabhas of Karachi, Poonekery and Pachchilai Palli in the Kilinochchi District.
Although action have been taken to issue temporary IDs to those who settled again in these areas they show no interest to collect them, the Divisional Secretary said.
The people in these areas say that they are not in a position to even spend Rs.400 rupees for photographs to obtain temporary identity cards.
