World Twenty20 hosts Sri Lanka are to beef up security after angry fans clashed with baton wielding police in Hambantota where the home side lost a match to South Africa, officials said today.

Local residents in the southern port town stormed the ground after they were told that tickets for yesterday’s match at the 35,000-capacity Mahinda Rajapakse International Stadium had been sold out, a security official told AFP.

“The crowds got very boisterous and they smashed the barricades and forcibly entered the grounds,” the official said, asking not to be named. “The baton charge did not deter them. A few thousand got in.”

Heavy rains shortened the group C game to a seven-overs-a-side match, which South Africa won by 32 runs.

Witnesses said local fans pelted stones at vehicles leaving the match venue after Sri Lanka lost the match. A heavy presence of the elite Special Task Forces commandos could not deter the angry crowds.

“Their anger was because they could not enter the grounds,” another official said. “When they broke down the barricades and came in they started shouting and making a big rumpus.”  (PTI)

They are taking an example from Malaka and Rehans recent experience. Good show, Sri Lanka. Violence and thuggery will bring you fame and glory. And dont forget, you have the blessings of the ministers.

What a shame.. Sri Lankan Cricket fans have never behaved in such manner.. we were always proud of our ability to accept defeat and respect our rivals.. How times are changing. A pure reflection of the ruling authorities.

It is miracle Hambanthotta people know something about cricket.

    shan Monday, 24 September 2012 04:20 AM

well guys there are other reasons too........ as usual we sri lankans are good in making some quick bucks........... some dops buy the 25 rupee tickets and sell for 500 bucks in the black market.... so people who can afford will go in........ people who had the right and affordability to buy the 25 rupee tickets were left with nothing............
so obviously they got pissed off............. this also could have fueled the anger..............

    eluwa Sunday, 23 September 2012 02:30 PM

    Uncivilized part of Sri Lanka
