Consultant clinical oncologists at the Maharagama Cancer Hospital have expressed their objection to the acceptance of radiotherapy machine as a donation from India for the treatment of cancer patients because of its sub-standard quality.

In a letter addressed to Health Ministry Secretary Dr. Ravindra Ruberu, they said that the ‘Bhabhatron radiotherapy machine’ is not a commercial machine marketed outside India, but has been installed in few remote locations in India for field testing. (KB)

It is a trick by India.
This is to encourage more patients coming to India.
India provide effective scanning of cancer, brain tumor at a cost in their own yard.

    J Dan Tuesday, 02 November 2010 04:40 PM

Pls dont expose our doctors to Radiation, we have already has an incidence at the Cardiology unit and lost a top Cardiologist few years ago.

    Hussein Tuesday, 02 November 2010 05:27 PM

This is a very generous gift by India and we are extremely thankful. The Maharagama cancer hospital consultants are probably angry because they did not get a chance to make money out of this tender. India should not gift any machines to Sri Lanka and they should let Sri Lankans develop their own technology. It is better for India to ignore Sri Lanka and let them run to the Chinese and Europeans for whatever their needs most often with a begging bowl.

    Anil Tuesday, 02 November 2010 07:17 PM

    Typically Indian

    jude Tuesday, 02 November 2010 08:40 PM

of course, India's garbage is Srilanka's fortune

    jude Tuesday, 02 November 2010 08:43 PM

atleast, dont buy that machine from india

    JAMES Tuesday, 02 November 2010 11:23 PM

    CONCLUSION
somebody high in in health ministry getting kickbacks to bring cheap machines- risking lives of patients..
it is like cheap vaccines imported that killed inocent children for kickback.. Thats why former health minister was given a demotion.

Relying on Aid and donations from sub-satandard countries like India and China would lead to such incidents. They have made Sri-lankans free test objects for their industries and drugs. Of course, someones in Goverment got the "Commis kutti"

    garawi Wednesday, 03 November 2010 12:54 AM

Quite right! Indian products are only sold in developing countries because they are know to be substandard. In the development process Sri Lanka should look westward and develop like the west and not try reach indian standards. Although India is a fast developing country and will be a major power one day as it is they are far behind the developed countries.

    SP Wednesday, 03 November 2010 02:51 AM

Should treat the people first who niether has a brain nor heart who agreed to accept such a machine for testing in Sri Lanka .. It is a great thing to refuse it at the first step ..

The Judge Tuesday, 02 November 2010 04:28 PM

I have seen newspaper reports as to people proceeding to India for various cancer treatments, so wht is the position on this matter. Can anyone comment including doctors from Cancer hospital at Maharagama?

    Nirupama Rao's smile says a lot ...................

    snf4 Wednesday, 03 November 2010 06:16 AM

Can't help, in this era Sri Lankans will have no other choice other than Chinese & Indian stuff. The Sri Lanka culture will also have adapt to that. Any way it in line with our ANTI- WEST SENTIMENT!

    Sam Wednesday, 03 November 2010 06:45 AM

If Indians can test cluster bombs and chemical bombs in Vanni why can't they test this machine in Maharagama?

Smart Aleck Wednesday, 03 November 2010 09:56 AM

And the poor Sri Lankan patient's misfortune.

Smart Aleck Wednesday, 03 November 2010 10:00 AM

Smart Aleck Wednesday, 03 November 2010 10:03 AM

We are a dumping ground. Earlier India dumped "Pollution Causing" 2-Stroke Tuk Tuks that are not permitted on Indian roads.

    straight Wednesday, 03 November 2010 10:33 AM

Great doctors ......rejecting these rathar than taking commision and made good comments on bad things

    guest Wednesday, 03 November 2010 04:12 PM

I am truly amazed by the comments mention, India is a country trying to develop. the only country in the world who have the technology to reuse spent nuclear fuel, One of the five countries that has the capsity to send a rocket to space and that country is trying to help Sri Lanka, I know the Tamils where from India that settled in Lanka but the whole country is not out to hurt other people. I have lived in Lanka and to be very honest love the place so much that i cannot describe in word the country and the people are the most beautiful and friendly i have ever seen. But please do not measure a country by the yard stick you use to measure people.

    seruvila Wednesday, 03 November 2010 08:57 PM

fake medicine, unlicen health care workers. whole health care system mess up.

    Geronimo Tuesday, 02 November 2010 11:22 AM

And finally, India too has begun to dump their junk on us! A big thank you!!

Nihal Amarasekera Tuesday, 02 November 2010 10:18 AM

If it is so "donations" could be "testing"

    Ramzeel Tuesday, 02 November 2010 10:23 AM

Oh the poor patients in Maharagama. The people who promoted this donation would realise the mistakes only when one of their kith or kin suffers from this dreaded disease. Most probably their patients will go overseas leaving the poor Sri Lankans to be Guinea Pigs.

good one Tuesday, 02 November 2010 10:24 AM

WE ARE NOT GUINEA PIGS. WE ARE SMARTER THAN THOSE FAKE DONORS. ARE THEY TRYING TO KILL OUR PEOPLE. ISN'T IT ENOUGH FOR THEM WHAT WE WENT THROUGH.

Jumbuli Jumba Tuesday, 02 November 2010 11:08 AM

Even if a headache is given free our guys are there to accept it readily!

    TDDC Tuesday, 02 November 2010 10:13 AM

That mean the Indians trying to test the technology at the cost of our cancer patients?". If so please can take the donation for diplomatic reasons, and keep it or donate to a technical university to learn its technology.

Edwardo Baltazar Tuesday, 02 November 2010 11:33 AM

WE WILL HAVE TO ACCEPT THIS AND LATER WE COULD DONATE THE SAME MACHINE TO A HOSPITAL IN THE STATE OF ORISSA IN INDIA

Sam of Hong Kong Tuesday, 02 November 2010 11:46 AM

    Ranjit Tuesday, 02 November 2010 12:36 PM

Above the crowd Tuesday, 02 November 2010 01:44 PM

They are dirty rats We have to be careful when we deal with them.
