Another crisis in the energy sector was emerging as a large number of vehicles, including five locomotive engines and SLTB and private buses had been stalled due to pumping alleged substandard diesel, sources said.

However, the Chairman, Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) D. Vidanagamachchi told Daily Mirror that they were receiving complaints for the last few days about engine troubles of buses and stalling of gantries at the Colombo Port.

“We checked the samples and found the diesel had been contaminated in the old pumping machines at the filling stations as these machines did not have filtering mechanism. Besides, the stalled new SLTB buses must be pumped with super diesel.

However, the Petroleum Industries Minister Susil Premjayantha has appointed a team to investigate the issue and report within two weeks,” Mr. Vidanagamachchi said.

SLTB Deputy General Manager (Technical) G.K.Ariyaratne said there was a break-down of 30 buses due to pumping of substandard diesel.
Meanwhile, private bus owners said that more than 25 buses plying in short-distance routes in Matugama and Ratnapura faced similar problems in their injectors.

Lanka Private Bus Owners Association (LPBOA) President Gemunu Wijeratne said the incidents were reported on Sunday. (Sandun A. Jayasekera and Supun Dias)

This has to be done immediately to teach a good lesson for them. But, what would be the verdict?

    Anura Tuesday, 31 July 2012 04:01 PM

Even super diesel is of substandard quality. I hv noticed an usual reduction in running milage per ltr during last 5 weeks or so. I hv tested with my old super diesel stocks and can be proved with one on comparison. No doubt CPC is playing hunger(corruption) games at out expense

    Jayanath Tuesday, 31 July 2012 11:54 PM

Minister knows how to earn black money.People know what he did as Education ninister. Now who is responsible for keeping him as a minister?

    gasssss Wednesday, 01 August 2012 01:34 AM

    gas

    Ananda Tuesday, 31 July 2012 03:08 PM

The minister is silly. When many vehicles develop trouble at the same time, could you blame it on sub-standard diesel pumps or not pumping super diesel ? If it is so, the pumps have gone bad as the same time or the bus operators have shifted to super diesel to normal diesel at the same time !

    Cyclops Wednesday, 01 August 2012 02:21 AM

Profit on the unfair price and profit on the substandard goods. Isn't there a limit to this plunder?

    sumith Wednesday, 01 August 2012 02:37 AM

this is the high time that president come forward and select educated and able people from the public as his ministers and reject the present guys.

Janaki Kalansuriya Wednesday, 01 August 2012 02:45 AM

Just one question. Are all and sundry allowed to import Petroleum products to the country and distribute, that the government is unable to find how such low quality diesel got into the market?

Calistus Jayatilleke Wednesday, 01 August 2012 07:45 AM

"sumith's" suggestion is a very good one. But the question is from where are they going to find "educated and able people" who are at the same time "patriotic", sychopants and willing to lick the boots of uneducated and inefficient political masters. In one Islamic country, they faced a similar problem when they needed bearded men to be kept as religious judges but when they found bearded men they were not educated and when they found educated men, they did not have beards!

    Ravi Wednesday, 01 August 2012 08:06 AM

    Sub standard people too ..eh?.....

    Gune Wednesday, 01 August 2012 08:24 AM

government wants to cut down the usage of fuel , this may be a solution they are thinking ???

Kapila Ekanayake Wednesday, 08 August 2012 04:20 AM

Minister Susil is innocent in this case too..... DO NOT BLAME HIM WITHOUT REASON. Minister do not know what QC parametres need to be checked. Chemist sf CPC should do such checks.

    hear we go again

    Notharismama Tuesday, 31 July 2012 03:09 PM

I am sorry you are completely misguided. For your info IOC Extra mile is worst form of Diesel you could pump! It is loaded with extra Sulphur for more power @ the expense of the engine. Talk to a expert & obtain proper advice before making misgided comments.

Sarath Abeysekera Tuesday, 31 July 2012 02:58 PM

Here we go again with another minister's Cock and Bull stories.
Ministers are good to gimmick the citizens of this country and cover up for their crooked dealings and the leaders of this country turn a blind eye whereby encouraging such things to continue and they do this to the very people who vote for them to be leaders. may these politicians and government servants rot in hell.

Monkey Joe Tuesday, 31 July 2012 01:52 PM

This so called diesel must be the cheap heating diesel used to heat houses during cold winter months. They are not suitable for motor vehicles & damages the engines. How safe are our Sri Lankan Airlines ...? All what goes up must come down one day..... !

    Crusader Tuesday, 31 July 2012 01:04 PM

Next would be kerosene. It would happen when after more drought the CEB announces power cuts. Then our kerosene lamps too would burn out due to mixing them with dirt.

Andrew Pitugala Tuesday, 31 July 2012 01:03 PM

First the Hedging deal, then the bad petrol that damaged a whole lot of vehicles and fuel pumps, then the CPC-Fujairah dispute and now the bad Diesel. Billions of Tax-payer's money robbed, some have collected their commissions and kickbacks but NONE HELD RESPONSIBLE.

Calistus Jayatilleke Tuesday, 31 July 2012 12:38 PM

Sub-standard oil and sub-standard schemes of the corporation. Now they have to sell sub-standard products to make up for the huge loss due to payment for the Hedging fiasco.

    Athi Tuesday, 31 July 2012 10:47 AM

All Diesel Machines will have problems with contaminated fuel. Super Diesel is the answer for today. Tomorrow we will be told to use Aviation Fuel!!

    Ganja Tuesday, 31 July 2012 10:54 AM

yes people have rights to take legal action against the petroleum cooperation. it is their duty to provide quality product for the price paid.

Just Another Citizen Tuesday, 31 July 2012 10:46 AM

Don't people have the right to take legal action?

Game Over Tuesday, 31 July 2012 10:44 AM

No worries, all those who had their engines will be paid rs. 50,000.00 off their own tax money.

    Gayanga Tuesday, 31 July 2012 10:30 AM

We are fed up with your investigations and please give us a solution and not only investigations to this never ending issue.

    Notharismama Tuesday, 31 July 2012 10:36 AM

Since of recent I have seen lot of new diesel vehicles with DCi (common rail diesel injection) vehicles being filled up with normal diesel. This may be due to ignorance or price. They should be filled with so called Super Diesel (Ultar low sulphur diesel - ULSD) only. This is due sulphuric acid formation in engine with normal diesel, that corrodes the engine chambers!
Their by destroying engines in short space of time.
