A 17 year old girl in Gampola has succumbed to her injuries after she set herself ablaze for failing her O/Level examinations. According to her family, the victim had ambitions of becoming a doctor and was shocked when she did not get through the exams.

Her twin sister however passed with flying colours.

The victim, V. Sahana had been unable to bear the brunt of her low marks and had set herself ablaze when her family members were away from the house.

A neighbour who saw fire burning inside Sahana’s house had immediately broken the front door which had been locked and found Sahana seated quietly in a corner while the flames engulfed her.

“She just sat in a corner quietly while she was burning. She must have been in deep pain for not passing her O/Level exams,” the neighbour told Daily Mirror online.

Sahana was immediately rushed to the Gampola Hospital where doctors tried their best to save her. However due to the deep burn wounds all over her body, Sahana succumbed to her injuries. (Daily Mirror online)

If the parents think that this world is only studies the ultimate result is this.
Parents must plane before the examination how to treat the children and to psychologically treat them.

Its a very sad incident which shows the true nature of the sri lankan education system. there must be serious thought and reforms in the education system . because education directly impacts the attitude and mentality of the future of sri lanka.
The next biggest menace of sri lanka is not politicians its tuition masters , sadly our education minister bandula gunawardane himself is a top notch tuition master(sarath amunugama would be a better choice).we can see where are going to end up.

The education system in Sri Lanka needs a drastic change from what it is now. This was required since many years back, unfortunately no responsible party took an action on this.

It's pathetic to see children commit suicide for failing an exam.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 08:56 AM

Our education system is the main reason for this situation. It's unnessesarity competitive. It makes immense preasure on children. Start from Grade one there is massive preasure on our children. Will see what Bandula will do.

This is my second comment if you allow me.

If the parents show love, affection and understanding when childen fail as well as when they win naturally children feel they are worth irrespective of if they fail or lose. Surely this poor daughter felt she betrayed her parents and felt totally empty and nothing in her which the parents can love for. If our parents show more love and understanding when children fail, and help them to understand why they fail naturally they will make a second attepmt and succeed.

This is bad side of parenting in Sri Lanka.
Though parents in SL give enormous care to their children, far better than in any developed country, they fail to know their limits on interfering in their kids' life.
It is very common that parents unduly influence/interfere a lot in deciding A/L curriculums of their kids, and so on. They expect their child to only come up with flying colours, and give too much pressure.
This phenomenon is common among both educated and uneducated parents.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:55 AM

I wont blame the child, even 13 years back I had the same feeling after I saw my OL results, which was 2D and 6C, I expected a much better results and was in real pain after the results were released.

The issue here in SL future mostly depends on O/L and A/L those who do well in these will have future for the others no future at all,

So some one should take actions to give hopes to every one.

Our parents love, show affection and appreciation when children come home as winners but they fail to show the same emotions when children come home as losers where they need more love and understanding. We cannot blame the parents too because they also need understanding.

May be some idiot marked her papers. If her twin sister passed with flying colours, she should have passed.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 06:08 AM

Parents impose undue pressure on children from grade one. They do not teach children to take the defeat gracefully. Look at some of the reality shows in the TV. Adult contestants fight, criticise judges and sometimes try dirty tactics to win. When they fail they howl in front of the whole country and extend a very bad example to youngsters who watch. These things must be taught before they compete by their trainers. Sad situation.

    how sad...over to you bandu...

    Monday, 26 April 2010 04:31 AM

In earlier days hardly anyone went for tuition. Today it is a fad. Childrens' failure at examinations are a reflection of either a faulty education policy and negligent teachers. Success at examinations is a reflection of a good teacher. Also, today PARENTS push children too much, and they cannot take it mentally & are stressed out.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 01:43 AM

Parents and our education system to be blamed.Parents push their childrens so much most of them become mentel recks. Then the private classes mushrooming with out any control resulting in this.

We need better childcare and counseling services, which are accessible especially to students, through schools, to prevent this type of events. This is such a shame. Any child her age would be upset.

    Sunday, 25 April 2010 11:30 PM

the government and the previous education minister is to be blamed for the muddle in sri lanka education system. It has become a competetion and with un-necessary presure for the children!

    Sunday, 25 April 2010 02:40 PM

This is sad but is suicide becoming fashionable with Sri Lankan teens?

    Sunday, 25 April 2010 11:09 AM

This is heartbreaking. That a child would feel so much pressure to excel...

    Sunday, 25 April 2010 10:09 AM

Rest In Peace or may attain nibbana !!

    Sunday, 25 April 2010 08:48 AM

It is indeed heart breaking to hear such a sad end to a young girl who had set a noble ambition for her life. My sympathies are with the parents. May her soul rest in peace.

    Sunday, 25 April 2010 08:44 AM

Yes, put more pressure on them to get good grades. It's pathetic how narrow minded Sri Lankan parents are. RIP little girl.
