The Special Task Force (STF) is currently raiding the office of General Sarath Fonseka located near Royal College in Colombo. An official at the General’s office said that over 200 STF personnel are searching the premises.

Our reporter at the scene said that the office has been surrounded by masked STF officers and the media is not being given access to the office.

UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya who visited the scene at the time of the raid, later told reporters that the STF had informed him they were looking for army deserters and illegal weapons hidden at the location but had not found anything during the search.

Several other opposition members had also visited the scene at the time of the raid this evening.

When contacted the STF Commandant DIG K.M.L Sarathchandra said that the STF had only assisted the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to conduct the search operation, as the office was under suspicion.

One of the lawyers of General Sarth Fonseka claimed that 15 ex-army personnel were questioned and taken away by the CID, despite of being informed that they were all retired officers and ordinary men.

    Saturday, 30 January 2010 08:20 AM

like every other citizen of SL Fonseka is not above the law. Simply beause he was former army general does not give him the right to assasinate the President and to organise coup attempt. Fonseka must be tried for his crimes. Raiding his office is a welcome step and people should be supportive of the move. I guess most people here are dissapointed because they were not able to pull tenders.

Its sad that the hearts of Sri Lankans have got so hardened. Murder, corruption and nepotism has become a part of ethical politics. This is not democracy this is hypocrisy. SL ppl should learn to stand against for what is wrong no matter who they are supporting for. Believe me we are laughing at the what is happening in your country. Your country needs an overhaul. Good night!

    Friday, 29 January 2010 10:27 PM

It is time that all Sri Lankans, including the media and politicians, stop this "Fonseka bashing" and direct our energies on getting MR to deliver on his promises of curbing corruption; ensuring development; upholding media freedom and law & order; etc. He remains accountable to the people who elected him.
