Mr.Prime minister, first stop slaughting the innocent civilians, your government dosent know the what is humanity? how to repect the humaity. you are talking about animals.
couple of years closer to haj festival this is hot topic.
for you people it is not good to slaughter but it is good to eat.

    xlntgson Tuesday, 02 November 2010 10:05 AM

Daily slaughter of animals should also be banned; and the import of meat fish and derivatives/products should also be banned.
I'm a Muslim but I prefer eating greens, vegetables, fruits and grains.

    Labby Tuesday, 02 November 2010 10:05 AM

If this is a problem for DM Jayaratne then let him solve his own problem. But there are certain sections and faiths which may need to do this, and no one has the right to infringe on those. We will be bringing on unnecessary problems in the country if legislation to this effect is passed.

    Jix Tuesday, 02 November 2010 10:22 AM

So Sri Lanka should adjust to your wants and needs and world views is it?

    Hasiya Tuesday, 02 November 2010 10:22 AM

An excellent move by DM! Well done sir!

FIRST YOU PEOPLE TRIED TO BRING THE LAW OF NO ONE CAN CHANGE FROM HIS PRESENT RELIGION-NOT ANIMAL SLAUGHTER- YOU GOSL ALWAYS BREAKS THE HUMAN RIGHTS LAW- like PATRIOT commented above

    my comment 'sacrifice' please

    bash Tuesday, 02 November 2010 10:29 AM

First stop or ban sacrificing for political survival, like sacrificing our brave war hero.............. he was one of the pillars to defeat the ruthless LTTE

    Jix Tuesday, 02 November 2010 10:31 AM

This is not a simplistic issue. A ban would definitely be discriminatory in nature against minority groups who practice is as a religious ritual. The only least damaging alternative maybe to set minimum standards in the process at all rituals and abattoirs (more pleasant word for a slaughterhouse)

    Ramzeel Tuesday, 02 November 2010 10:47 AM

Di Mu should not trespass in religious affairs. May be he understands that he will not be voted by the Muslims in Gampola at the next General Election since his time is up..

    subavadee Tuesday, 02 November 2010 10:47 AM

The word he used "animal sacrifice" is directly targeting Muslims and going against Islam. Because this is the hajj season where sacrifice is part of the rutuals. We all should know that scientifically Humans are omnivors. All religions prohibit unnecessary killing of Animals. But Meat is part of human diet and any relegion cannot deny it. If it denies, that religion is not going with nature. If DMJ had said "animal slaughter will be banned" there would be some sense that he is a good buddist. But this is purely angering a community and creating troubles, that is against Buddism too. So he is not a pure Buddist, I think.

    hayesha Tuesday, 02 November 2010 10:56 AM

One wise decision he's going to take, many thanks for that.

    nihal Tuesday, 02 November 2010 10:57 AM

You mean.. stop killing animal and allowing to slaughter humen who opose the Gvt. mainly media men???

    Mashook Tuesday, 02 November 2010 10:58 AM

Country's 63% beef consumers are PURE BUDDHISTS (according to a documentary which telecast over RUPAVAHINI with a group of people including a SCIENTIST / MONK / PROFESSOR). Dear P.M. Do not try to interfere into other religions matter. YOU MAY BE OLD AND DOCTOR WOULD HAVE TOLD NOT TO HAVE BEEF

    Lankaputra Tuesday, 02 November 2010 11:04 AM

It is not! Animal sacrifices are banned in India! Do you see people there running around claiming discrimination?

    Rahmathullah Tuesday, 02 November 2010 11:07 AM

There many to talk about animal rights but none to talk about human rights in Sri-Lanka. Are we lower than animals?

    Ranga Tuesday, 02 November 2010 11:07 AM

Should ban eating Beef, Chicken, Mutton, Fish & egg. Even drinking cow milk also a sin. We kill lot of living bacteria while drinking milk. A real vegetarian will not drink milk.

    Abinnadana - refrain from stealing
Kamesu micchacara - refrain from sexual misconduct
Musavada - refrain from telling lies
Sura-meraya-majja-pamadatthana - refrain from intoxicating liquors & drugs that lead to carelessness

As the prime minister of the GOSL, are you satisfied with the above FIVE precepts of Buddhism, which clearly outlines the way of life for humans before considering looking at the wellbeing of animals? Every single percept is broken due to the involvement of politicians or loopholes, which exists with the law.

Banning only for "sacrifice"? How about daily slaughter of animal for food, like cattle, chicken, fish or crabs? The minister himself may not know the implications of what he is trying to do.

just you are targeting the media coverage for your statement. doing or stating such sensible & shocking things are bring media easily to your home desk.
There is nothing to do with Muslims ritual of animal sacrificing and his funny statement, just this is a move of his political tactics(???) .. totally irresponsible statement.
This is kind of psychological sickness which is politicians are effected internationally.

May God bless him for Good knowledge

    Mohamed Tuesday, 02 November 2010 11:45 AM

Now the month of Haj and the 10th day of this month is a Holy day for us Muslims. Our Hon PM is trying to put a another Gundu to stir up trouble with this rubbish talk of bringing regulations to stop slaughtering of animals for sacrificing. It is bad to slaughter, but good to eat when some rich merchant or the adjoining town Minister brings a BIIIGGgg Plate (SHAHEN we Muslims call) of rice with a KURMA Lamb Chop and Chicken etc is he going to throw away? Pl Hon PM respect the rights of the Muslims and others who want to eat flesh meat.

    CD Tuesday, 02 November 2010 11:53 AM

This says banning animal "sacrifice". So I assume that it is not targeted at stopping killing for day to day requirements of meat, but on special occasions like "Bili puja". If this assumption is right, this is a good move. We are in the 21st century and its shame to do such rituals. If those who do it have no sense or brains to understand that, making it a law is the best approach. In most countries it is like that.

    Fair n Square Tuesday, 02 November 2010 11:54 AM

He just opened a can of worms. Now it will boomerang on him. Dear Minister, IF SPEECH is silver SILENCE is GOLDEN. SL is a multi ethnic country, be tolerant to all religions and don't step on others rights. It is scientifically proven that slaughtering an animal is more healthy than Stunning it. When slaughtered the blood oozes out with all the poison within, where as when stunned, the animal is shocked and the blood freezes with the flesh with the poison in it. I read this on a BBC news article after a UN research.

    RANJITH Tuesday, 02 November 2010 12:08 PM

As if this is the most pressing need of the moment. President's term is extended even before he starts his next term. Sacrifice is to be banned while daily animals are slaughtered for food. If slaughter is allowed whats wrong with sacrifice. In both case4s the meat is consumed. If only sacrifice is stopped, that amount of meat will anyway be consumed thru slaughtering animals at the abattoirs.

    Mervyn Tuesday, 02 November 2010 11:18 PM

Mr. Minister, sacrificing animals is a ritual, mainly among Hindus, and it is their belief that Gods will be happy when they sacrifice animal life in their honour. It is not correct to destroy any life(according to Buddhism) in that case your government should not support fishing industry as well as slaughtering cattle/goat/sheep/chicken etc. You should bring legislature that any killing is against the law. But, you should remember that after the deluge God told Noah , "that every moving animal that is alive may serve as food for you. As in in case of green vegetation I do give it all to you. Only flesh with its soul its blood you must not eat".

    Yusuf Wednesday, 03 November 2010 02:52 AM

From most of the comments which advocae for the ban of animal sacrifice I gather they do so not because they love animals but just to deprive a minority community of their religious rights. Wake up guys, we've gone through this once. Try to live and let the others also live "Peacefully".
By the way, no Hindu or Buddhist scriptures prohibit such sacrifices or eating of animal flesh. Its just a myth created by certain group of people in India for politiacal gains.

Namal Silva Wednesday, 03 November 2010 03:10 AM

Animal sacrifice must stop for good!

WELL DONE SIR! YOUR DECISION IS 100% CORRECT!

This is a Buddhist Country! There will be protests from Muslim & some other religious people. But a lot of people will approve that decision!

BRING IT TO THE PARLIAMENT AS A ACT! WE EXPECT IT!

One questions for Muslims & other Animal Sacrifice people ( like Maha Kali kovil)

KILLING A HUMAN OR ANIMAL IS A SIN! IF YOUR GOD SAYS, NO SIN OF SACRIFICE ANIMALS BUT DO NOT KILL HUMANS! THEN YOUR GOD SUCK MY ASS!

There is no single country that has banned meat . Also this is ridiculous move people who are going to ban this , those are the one who eat meat more than other.

This is a just move on only single view point , we need to analyze this deeply , because this is a country who lives with major four religion.

Even scientifically , we cannot expected the nutrition level that meat provides from vegetarian , which means people get weak on every sector as nation.

being a vegetarian because of a personal faith, belief or personal viewpoint is a different matter.
But think, If all of the people in the world became vegetarians what would be the result? Naturally human is omnivorous creature. So then whole natural stability would be collapsed and ended up with severe malnutrition problems. Changing a natural system as you want is not a good idea.

As you have said, This is a Buddhist Country and therefore whoever lives here should abide by Buddhist virtues!
Alcohols are banned in Saudi and most other Muslim nations and anyone living there has to oblige. So why not we have the spine to stand tall live according to not just the religion but what our conscience says.
Animals be it sea or land living live at the mercy of us- the humans since we are far superior. So, isn't it a shame for a superior breed to kill and eat an inferior breed ? Just throw away religiuos edicts which promote killing!

Well the Prime Minister has nothing to do for the salary and perks he receives, so therefore he comes out with some thing of no use.Like last week he came out with a stupid bread talk and requesting that the price of bread should go up higher.Yes fine cause he gets it free. Do you mean to say he clouts 3 meals of rice per day. If so one can understand why he talks so stupid. How much stupid one can get

Farook, liquor and killing animals are two different things. Consume alcohol also dangerous to the health and to the public as well. But this is a Buddhist country and you have to accept that and respect.

    Ranjith Wednesday, 03 November 2010 07:14 AM

FYI: Saudi is pure Muslim country but in Sri Lanka only 70% Buddhist. And Alcohol is prohibited in all religions why can't ban Alcohol before meat items?

being a vegetarian because of a personal faith, belief or personal viewpoint is a different matter.
But think, If all of the people in the world became vegetarians what would be the result? Naturally human is omnivorous creature. So then whole natural stability would be collapsed and ended up with severe malnutrition problems. Changing a natural system as you want is not a good idea.

    zanfani Wednesday, 03 November 2010 08:49 AM

Hon PMs Government is issuing licence to meat shops to slaughter animals. let him stop this first. Likely, cigarettes, toddy and arrack, adolesence, gambling, lottery all are under government licence and approval. Is this appropriate for a budhist country like Sri Lanka. There are more than 600 illegal abortions daily in this holy island. Can't we stop killing this innocents babies before we show mercy to animals ?

asoka abeywardena Wednesday, 03 November 2010 08:52 AM

Ranjith, Sri Lanka too were 100% Buddhist country but we have allowed other people to live and practice their respective religions unlike other Muslim countries where you cannot practice Buddhism or keep a statue or a photo. In Saudi you will be punished if found.

    Dear brother Namal,,

You excited & immediate reply without a second thought will provoke not only other communities but also degrade the Good & peace loving Buddhists and other citizens, You should avoid these kind of statement publicly and if you have problem in understanding religion or religions, please first study thoroughly a religion of your choice and come to a conclusion.

    Mahmood Wednesday, 03 November 2010 09:18 AM

There is no need to do this and that first. Don't confuse two unrelated things. Meat industry is a totally different thing. Needlessly killing animals in the name of religion should stop. No religion encourages needless animal killings.

    Foresight Wednesday, 03 November 2010 09:24 AM

So many posters have stepped on their own tails while commenting on page. 'Sacrifice' is not slaughter. No effect on availability of meat and poultry if sacrifice is stopped. Sacrifice very rare and happens only in some infidel religious events.

Good move. However is it viable?. It is not very clear whether it is only for public or for everybody including vips. How about hotels?
And when the government hosts functions for foreign delegates will it be only vegetarian food??? How about parliament food and in the other vips?? If this can be applied to every citizens of the country irrespective of classes it is defensibly a good move. Otherwise bullshit.

    Fouzer Wednesday, 03 November 2010 09:36 AM

Namal, Where does Buddhism says not to eat meat? According to my knowledge it says "not to take life". So you must stop eating not only meat but fish, chicken and even vegetables. Muslims do not sacrifice to please the god but to give poor people to enjoy the festival.

    Jix Wednesday, 03 November 2010 09:45 AM

Namal, you have trying to make a legitimate point but please try to do this more respectfully and sensitively. Your speak like a typical ‘Cosmetic Buddhist’ that is only ‘Buddhist’ by title and not my practice. But then again, for one to understand the essence of the Buddhist dharma, you need a certain capacity that you unfortunately, obviously seem to lack.

    Ranga Wednesday, 03 November 2010 10:15 AM

We cannot ban killing animals at once. Should things happen gradually.

The best what we can do is all the Buddhist & Hindus (because Christians & Muslims do not have a problem of eating meat) should stop eating beef, fish, chicken & egg. Then 65% of the sales of beef, fish, chicken & egg will go down island wide. Most of these shops will start to close down.

Also, we should stop selling animals to butchers. Also we should not send our people for fishing. We should stop having farms for chicken at home. This will stop another 30% of killing animals.

Ultimately, everything will be normal. We can build a vegetarian country.

    xlntgson Wednesday, 03 November 2010 10:20 AM

Of five precepts of Buddhism how only one of that takes precedence over others; if it is Buddhist nation and if we want to uphold it we should see the possibilities of all of them implemented at once not in a piecemeal fashion then there won't be problems like extra judicial killings, killed in action and killed while trying to escape, all justified murders! How can you justify murders! @Naren @Namal Silva and others of same view!
I'm a non smoker, teetotaller, not by pressure or due to circumstances but on my own conviction never I've tasted liquor.

He explained in technical terms the importance of meat intake in our diet.

Wow! what a storm of comments created due to this spectacular overview by the PM. I feel he needs some attention being kept in the dark so long. The puppet needs to dance or makes moves to the crowd. The issue of slaughter reminds me that even though Buddhists and Hindus are supposed to be vege or non-animal eaters, they tend to hide without any this fact and enjoy the adventure of it.
This is to fact even the Buddhist clergy at a 'tith or alms giving on the anniversary of a friend's dad's death anniversary other than the orange robe, they requested mutton to be served' with tight capped container. My friend was rather shocked but had to give in to their request as after all they don't expect any monetary gains for their service.
Please read your holy books right before you could make any phrases as to what the religious books say about animal eating. I have some puranas mention of animal eating to strengthen your physical well being.

    Siri Wednesday, 03 November 2010 12:20 PM

Yours is a disgusting excuse to support your craving for meat! How can you compare, say a tomato with a cow strapped up and struggling with froth oozing from its mouth and eyes bulged in fear as you prepare to run a knife through its neck?

    slmnyusuf Wednesday, 03 November 2010 01:30 PM

meat is something necessary for humans.humans have digestive systems that digest both veg and meat, which means it is necessary for our body.and anyone without meat is defective.and for anyone talking about living in the 21st century,
get yourself updated with the latest scientific discoveries as well.becoz plants feel and express pain in the same way as animals, when they are chopped down, only that it is not in the visible or audible region of humans.

@herath, How they kill pigs, slitting the throat?

    Praveen Saturday, 20 November 2010 12:41 PM

    Namaste.

Firstly, I am a Sri Lankan Hindu. Let me address some of the false allegations made on Hindus and Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism):

    1. We believe in one God (Ishwar). There is no polytheism or anything other than monotheism in Vedas.

    2. Animal sacrifice is not a part of Dharma. Such practices are forbidden in Vedas.

Vedas are the ultimate authority on Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism) and are the only Shruti texts (texts revealed by Ishwar), it's also unchangable and has remained unchanged since it's inception through methods of Swara Chinha and Paatha Vidhi. All other texts are man-made and are prone to alterations and therefore should only be accepted if it complies with Vedas, if it doesn't it should be rejected.

On another note, Buddha encouraged vegetarianism. He clearly stated that eating meat is a paap and that it is not possible to achieve Nirvana.

    Praveen Sunday, 21 November 2010 05:46 PM

    Namaste.

I will now address some other claims:

    1. It is now proven that the human body digests vegetarian food with ease as opposed to meat which is very taxing on the body.

    2. The digestive system being able to digest meat isn't justification for eating meat. By that logic, humans are fair game for meat too.

    3. Vegetarianism does not make one weak. All nutrients available in meat can be obtained through vegetarian foods. For example, there are many vegetarian bodybuilders, athletes, etc.

Meat eating is now proven to lead to countless illnesses. Cancer, heart and other respiratory diseases are a few examples of the illnesses.

STUPID SRI LANKAN Tuesday, 23 November 2010 08:04 AM

BUDDHISTS AND HINDUS PRACTICE AHIMSA BEFORE PREACHING TO OTHERS.BAN MANSLAUGHTER BEFORE
CATTLE SLAUGHTER AND BRING IN DEATH PENALTY

    Praveen Tuesday, 23 November 2010 11:15 AM

    Namaste.

Manslaughter is already a crime. Hindus and Buddhists do practice Ahimsa.

Killing animals however hasn't been made a crime as of yet, so that is, logically, the next step.
