Sri Lankan detained at BIA with gold

A 35-year-old Sri Lankan who attempted to smuggle two pieces of gold slabs valued at Rs 1.1 million was detained at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) yesterday and handed over to Customs at Airport Departure lounge.

He had attempted to smuggle the two gold slabs weighing 231g to Chennai by concealing them in two mobile phones, Customs Media Spokesman (Legal) said.

After the Customs Inquiry held by Deputy Director of Customs Mr. Sunil Premaratna, the Gold slabs were forfeited and imposed a penalty of Rs. 50,000.00
