Amidst concern over the slow growth rate of the Sinhala population, Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council Chief Minister Mahipala Herath said that the ‘small family concept’ was no longer valid in Sri Lanka today.

The Chief Minister was apparently referring to the heavily campaigned ‘Punchi Pawula Raththaran’ concept in the 1980s. He said it was an irrelevant concept today because the country needed more and more pious and wise children for its forward march. He was making these remarks at a function held to mark the Kegalle district summit of the Government’s Midwifery Services Association.

The Chief Minister said that midwives had a greater role to play in nullifying the validity of this small family concept. “Like the Central Government, the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council has given priority to develop the health sector. The small family concept was highly recognized once. Now, parents should be encouraged to produce more and more children ,” he said.

    dude Saturday, 19 January 2013 01:45 PM

Even though the fact is pretty much true , I never expected this kind of expression from a government minister. I find it a little bit offensive and raciest , to be honest.

    Ann Saturday, 19 January 2013 01:47 PM

Some people live with their head in the hand and don't want to accept the truth when you point it out...

    rumi Saturday, 19 January 2013 01:58 PM

Martin Singho Saturday, 19 January 2013 02:03 PM

He is reinforcing the fact that Sinhalayas are Modayas....... keep your mouth shut please. Is it a must that growth in population should be of Sinhalayas. As long as our children are not fools like you all of us will be happy.

    Namal Saturday, 19 January 2013 04:31 PM

He was referring to the RULING "Maha Pawula"- which has become the bane of the nation!

    Jamal Sunday, 20 January 2013 03:14 AM

It is very relevant under the present expenses and poor medical facilities in rural areas.

    Prem Sunday, 20 January 2013 05:21 AM

That needs a policy.Bring a Bill to Parliament confining only three children a man should have.

Who Cares Sunday, 20 January 2013 05:47 AM

Only politicians and their stooges will be able to afford bringing up children in the future.

    Ruzaick Sunday, 20 January 2013 06:30 AM

As per Bandula a single person can survive with 2500/- rupees for a entire whole month, dear mr. minister could u first give me a proper wise solution for that.

Calistus Jayatilleke Sunday, 20 January 2013 07:02 AM

Oh yes, Mr. Chief Minister. The "maha Jaathiya" is in desperate need for mjore "maha janaya": to keep on voting for the "Maha Pawla" so that the Maha Pawla can go on ruling the idiotic "Jaha Manaya". What the CM forgot or neglected to mention is who is going to feed the extra mouths at this time of fast rising cost of living with even a simple vegetable being unaffordable to the ordinary folk.

Paisa Musthappah Saturday, 19 January 2013 01:34 PM

Go on, beat the communal drum and create more problems in the country. Idiot man.

This so called false patriotism is something the rich and powerful use to mobilize the poor to go and fight their wars. If they really want to uplift the poor and downtrodden I can think of a million and one things to do. How about this joker give up his state funded luxury car(s)? The millions saved in just that act alone could transform a few villages into the current century.

come on people - there;s nothing racist about this? Sinhalese are an endangered species. You get Tamils, Muslims all over the world but Sinhalese only in Sri Lanka - so what's wrong asking the Sinhalese to produce more children??? Nobodies blaming anyone other than the Sinhalese - unfortunately most of the Sinhalese are poor and they cannot afford to have a lot of children - so sad...

Gabo Singho Monday, 21 January 2013 07:57 AM

We dont need more mouths to feed. More condoms is the answer to the problem of over population which breeds poverty.

With these economic conditions, Infant milk should also be sold in sachet packets, so that the families can consider making more babies.

    Amintha Saturday, 19 January 2013 08:26 AM

Well said SIR. We are happy that there is at least a single politician has the back born to talk about the truth. Most of gusty Sinhala youth had killed during 30 years LTTE war time and twice under JVP's stupid uprising. Hence we need to produce more Sinhalese to protect the country is a requirement of the hour.

Dear Chief Minister, Only the grand scale thieves,Narcotic dealers (who caters to disillusioned frustrated youth), ransom & commission earners and politicians (who are also glorified thieves and one or another above categories), can breed big families. If you successfully promote your concept, next but one generation will be descendants of rogues.

Protect the country for who? Is it for pious Sinhala Buddhists?
If you want to motivate people, better to give further details.
