A A A

The first female Attorney General of Sri Lanka Eva Wanasundera will take oaths before President Mahinda Rajapaksa today.

Wanasudera took over as the acting Attorney General of the country from September 1, 2011 subsequent to former Attorney General Mohan Peiris’ retirement on August 31, 2011. The new Attorney General is scheduled to address members of the department at around 3pm today at the department’s auditorium.

Wanasundera joined the Attorney General's Department in 1979 as a State Counsel. she  subsequently served as Senior State Counsel, Deputy Solicitor General, Additional Solicitor General and Solicitor General before her appointment as the Attorney General .

The appointment is unique as it’s a rarity for a country for both the Chief Justice and the Attorney General to be females. (FM)

i honestly can't understand why (so far) 9 people have given your comment a negative mark!!
What's wrong with you people?! How does Janak congratulating someone on a great career landmark warrant negative comments?! You people need to have your heads examined.

previous AG played a doubtful and suspicios roll, it was clear with certain decisions he made. influenced by certain politicians. hope legal system will not get ruin more and further, wish the honourable lady above will stand firm when it comes to right and wrong

    Minister Monday, 12 September 2011 07:38 AM

Congratulations and best wishes on your historical appointment. There is a saying "the new broom sweeps well". Hope you will be able to sweep and clean the area you are going to be the head of as per the aspirations of the law abiding citizens of Sri Lanka which is a dire need. May God Bless you.

It is your duty to protect and preserve the judicial system from the corrupt politicians. We do not want Sri Lanka to be another Libya. Wish you courage to stand up against threats.

This rarity is all fine, but we also have a rarity of being manipulated and corrupted by politicians including the law and legal infrastructure. It remains to be seen whether the advocation of women can infuse ethics and discipline that the recent men who held these posts failed to show.
