This is the first time the SLMC is contesting on its own after the 1994 General elections. Since then its vote base has been camouflaged under the UNP or UPFA under which it contested. In the CMC elections in 2002 it contested under UNP and won 8 seats . In 2011 it contested alone and won just 2 seats. So let their nakedness be truly exposed once and for all.

    akalankadayananda Wednesday, 18 July 2012 10:45 AM

Why do the national parties like UNP & SLFP go behind these opportunists . Why can't they built their own bases among muslims and tamils

    kirihami Wednesday, 18 July 2012 10:18 AM

I did not paid 5bn sofar.Tonight it will be your account. Thanks

    Mithra Wednesday, 18 July 2012 10:16 AM

If he contested under UPFA , he would hv lost his vote base, now his plan is to get the seats & join with UPFA to gain majority in Council . Even if it happens, a SLMC member will not be made the Chief Minister. Voters in East think twice.

    nimal Wednesday, 18 July 2012 11:31 AM

can people trust these politicians? What will happen to Azad sally?

Sapumal Bandara Wednesday, 18 July 2012 09:26 AM

    Reverse Jump...

    Imthiyaz Wednesday, 18 July 2012 09:17 AM

Not only Mr. Rauf Hakeem, also late leader Ashraff used to jump from party to party. Those who knows the history can remember it. The problem here is not Hakeem, but from the place where he hails from. If hakeem is born in the Eastern Province, he would have crowned with the leadership. We all know when Late Ashraff was the leader, how Mr. Hisbullah reacted in the party.

    Marikkar Wednesday, 18 July 2012 08:58 AM

This decision is absolutely a politically motivated one, under the cover of safeguarding the rights of Sri Lankan Muslims. Naming SLMC as SL Eastern Congress as suggested by aaa would be a very good option. Politicians are always taking decisions prioritizing their own interests and agendas ahead of national and communal interests. Therefore this is not a remarkable decision to exclaim. Just wait and see his attitudes upon winning the elections.

    zaheerdeen Wednesday, 18 July 2012 08:59 AM

Very poor taste. Daily Mirror shamelessly publishes such a degrading statement. Poor journalism and a clear indication of the sad trend. Sickness abounds.

    Iqbal Thursday, 19 July 2012 11:33 AM

Ministerial perks are more important than the rights of ethnic communities.

    Mithra Thursday, 19 July 2012 10:53 AM

nicky karunarathna Thursday, 19 July 2012 12:55 AM

These guys are changing and turning according to their hat. Mhainda R should kick this guy out forthwith as he got his agenda(presidential term change). So what is the use of keeping his party in the government now. Even he goes to UNP, he wil change and turn in time to time. If nobody take him, he l will have a untimely death soon!

Sri Minnal Wednesday, 18 July 2012 07:08 PM

    Fathima Wednesday, 18 July 2012 07:15 AM

Al Hamthulillah. Hakeem has taken a historical decision after a decade almost. This historical victory should go to Sec. General and his colleagues who prefer the community than anything else. Eastern Provincial Council will turn the speculations other way around. Allahu Akbar.- God is Great.

    nafri Wednesday, 18 July 2012 07:47 AM

Good answer to Sally, Mano and other critics made over the past two days.

    puri Wednesday, 18 July 2012 07:53 AM

Hope he has taken a sane decision.

    DireStraits Wednesday, 18 July 2012 07:15 AM

Politicians! Can not believe one word they say. Nothing they say or do is based on policy or consistency. If only words they say had a tax attached to it. Every single one will be a homeless beggar by now. All in all, it's sad that they are a useless bunch of bickering idiots who have not done anything they promise. No one but us to blame since we keep re-electing them as our leaders when they have nothing but their own interest at heart. When will we ever learn?

    Jehan Wednesday, 18 July 2012 06:55 AM

SLMC has sniffed the tide against the government....

    Fazli Wednesday, 18 July 2012 06:59 AM

I sincerely hope thats the final go. The decision to 'stand alone' will certainly be an Acid Test for SLMC and a good yard stick to measure its own reputation and that of RH. Good Luck.

    PRAD Wednesday, 18 July 2012 06:47 AM

    Is Norway in action again...

    Adam Wednesday, 18 July 2012 06:48 AM

    Nodrog Wednesday, 18 July 2012 06:41 AM

This guy has no scruples or ethics. Shamelessly sells himself to the highest bidder at every election. Waiting to see if he will keep to his word.

    Pad Wednesday, 18 July 2012 08:53 AM

    That is true

    mijwadh Wednesday, 18 July 2012 08:40 AM

Another cat on wall decision with nothing fruitful to the people, poor muslim community has to suffer with air-conditioned SLMC decisions.

Imran Hussein Wednesday, 18 July 2012 08:40 AM

I dont think he has. Either he is totally confused or its a regime plan to stop an inevitable UNP win in the eastern province. Any way Rauf hakim missed the bus.

    Padma Wednesday, 18 July 2012 08:39 AM

Hi Hakeem :-You collapsed Chandrika regime an over night. Will it repeat again?

    Fazli Wednesday, 18 July 2012 08:37 AM

I sincerely hope this is the final call. The decision to 'stand alone' will be an Acid Test and a good yard to measure SLMC reputation and that of RH. Good Luck !

    muhandiram Wednesday, 18 July 2012 08:47 AM

“ We are contesting under the SLMC’s tree symbol for the elections , however we will work very closely with the government during the election” Speaking to the Daily Mirror Rauff Hakeem said.

He wants to have the cake and eat it!

    sayan Wednesday, 18 July 2012 08:40 AM

contest alone to get seats and jump to UPFA ..

    mahmoud Wednesday, 18 July 2012 08:30 AM

OMG... how to belive this guy.... please ask this guy to remove Muslim name from the party name. it is the big help this guy can do for srilankan people.

    Niwunhella Wednesday, 18 July 2012 08:22 AM

If SLMC contest under Tree symbol for Provincial Council elections, they should contest alone with same symbol for upcoming Parliamentary elections too.

    Achari Wednesday, 18 July 2012 06:35 AM

    Very good move.

    vimal Wednesday, 18 July 2012 08:12 AM

He has become so used to jumping around that now he is confused which coalition he is in.

Al Rasa Wednesday, 18 July 2012 07:58 AM

Minority parties have never given up their bargaining attitude for
more prosperity to their own communities. All governments fall pray to these issues to maintain political power including the present government. So called national integration is not happening realistically as every one has greed to power.

    Wimal_Modawansa Wednesday, 18 July 2012 08:09 AM

    begining of the end?????

    Ruzaiki Wednesday, 18 July 2012 08:09 AM

welcome this is what we expect from you.

Calistus Jayatilleke Wednesday, 18 July 2012 07:55 AM

"Aiyo Paavam!" Nobody's Child. This is a classic example of the old Sinhala saying "The bird who jumps from branch to branch gets drenched and dies".

Maru Maru Wednesday, 18 July 2012 08:03 AM

    Good Idea !

    idiot Wednesday, 18 July 2012 07:46 AM

Do they call this turning the cap? Only can come from SLMC.

    aaa Wednesday, 18 July 2012 07:56 AM

Mr.Rauff Hakeem, Is it possible to change Muslim Congress as Eastern Congress? That would be a great service to Muslim society.
