Two hundred and twenty eight persons were treated at the Colombo National Hospital with injuries due to road traffic accidents, violence and fireworks till 8.00am today, the Director of the Colombo National Hospital Dr. Hector Weerasinghe told Daily Mirror online.

He added that there was a slight increase in accidents this year with only 203 persons admitted last year during December 31st 2009 and January 1st 2010 period.

The accidents and injuries relating to fire works was low this year with only 11 being reported, this is due to the constant public education regarding the dangers of fireworks when not properly used, Dr. Weerasinghe said.

Forty persons were treated at the Colombo National Hospital due to violence related incidents, 62 due to road traffic accidents and 11 due to firework mishaps during the New Year. (Daily Mirror online)

Road traffic accidents and violence can be attributed to the failure of 'Mathata Thitha' and injuries due to careless use of fireworks is due to not banning its use in the first place. Did anyone notice that this time there were less crackers lit than previous years? That is because people have come to realize that lighting crackers is like setting fire to currency notes they have very little of!
